Been playing acoustic guitar for a couple of years and I've become alright at it. Decided I'm going to go out and buy myself an electric but I've really got no idea what I'm doing.

What should I be doing BigFooty? I'd say my budget for the guitar itself is around $700, no idea how much I should be spending on an amp for a guitar around that price range? Suppose it should be a solid state amp but I've absolutely no clue on what I should be going for.

Help pls.

Ok a couple of questions. Firstly, what sort of genres will you be playing? You'll want a completely different amp if you're playing jazz than if you're playing metal. I would definitely go solid state, then move up to a tube amp if you decide you want to keep at it.

I started with a Line 6 Spider 3. Avoid them like the plague :p The Spider IV is apparently not bad. I've only heard good things about the Roland Cubes, and the Fender Mustang I V.2. I think they're both around $200, but don't quote me on that.

If you're not going to be playing in a band setting, then 20 watts or 30 watts will be heaps. If you are going to be playing in a band, then 30 watts might be enough, maybe go for 40 watts or even 50 watts, but they can go REALLY loud. So safest bet would be to go for a 30 watt amp.
