All this talk about Brendan Lade on Saturday night has got me thinking how teams manage their emergency lists for games.

  • Should the 3 emergencies be a ruckman, KPP, and small

On Saturday we had Michael Doughty, Luke Jericho, Bryce Campbell as emergencies. We could have been in a similar situation to Port if one of our ruckmen went down.

  • Should one of the emergencies be kept fresh and play a Sunday SANFL game

We could have brought in Doughty who would have been fresh if we were in Port's situation. But should the Crows and Power have the option to hold back an emergency (or a travelling emergency) from playing for their club on Saturday; however, then be able to play them in the Sunday reserves team for the lower ranked club. e.g. Port could have held back Lower from Norwood as an emergency, and have him play in the South vs Port reserves game on Sunday for Port who are lower on the ladder than South. (I know this would disadvantage South, but I'm looking at it entirely from an AFL perspective)

  • Teams that play a lot of Friday night games seem to have an advantage over teams that play Saturday nights or Sundays as they are free to make late changes

Say for example a player coming back from injury is named in the team, but doesn't feel quite right after the warm up. He can be replaced easily with an emergency who is probably already at the game. However, if that same player was playing on a Sunday they might not feel right, however, they have to play as all the named emergencies played on the Saturday.

I’m sorry but that is rubbish. Way to treat the SANFL like a joke of a competition.

You can't just sub him into any old SANFL reserves team, if he was EVER going to play reserves to keep form/fitness he would go to the bottom placed reserves team, not whoever plays at a later date.

Rubbish. :thumbsd:

I think we saw from Port that you should ALWAYS have a ruckman on the emergency list particularly if you don't have many capable temporary ruckmen. Even if they had played that day they can still pitch in for 5-10 mins a quarter just to give the main ruckman a rest.

Pay the fine

Which we have done before.

Last year Maric was brought in after he had played a couple of quarters in the sanfl. He wasn't on the emergencies list, so we just copped the fine and played him.

I was making a comment purely from an AFL point of view. SANFL Reserves is a bit of a crappy competition though, that no one really cares about how many premierships Reserves teams have one or who was the Reserve's Magarey Medallist. A few guys straight out of U19's although they don't last long if they don't get a crack in the firsts, a few players that think they are good enough to be firsts but are pretty average, and a few depth first grade players. Most reserves player I know play 1 or 2 years max in Reserves and give it away for Country or amateur footy.

Actually Toby has done the job before and did very well in his grand total of 4 minutes.
Why Choco then put Lade back on his anybody's guess.

Agree but somehow Toby became very important to Port's defensive structure. I mean when he was a dodgy 3rd forward you could have him pinch hit in ruck when need be, but Williams probably (wrongly IMO) saw him as more important in defence then in the ruck.

Always worth having a back up ruckman as it's usually disasterous when one goes down (see prelim final last year:()

We could have spared him. We had 5 talls down back (4 + Chad) one in the ruck and one up front.
4+1+2 (Westhoff + Lade) would have worked. We are talking of only 5-6 minutes per quarter.
As far as ability goes, he had 7 H/O, Maric had 8, so he is capable to pinch hit for a few minutes.

Anyway been and gone, no doubt Choco has done a couple of Mea Culpas since then. :p

Westhoff is some 199cm tall isn't he? Has either Centrals or Port given him any ruck training? I know he's a rake but he has the height to eventually play a role like that (if he's capable).

Yep.

He was definitely the alternative given how dysfunctional Port's forward structure was anyway. Five years ago you'd be very wary of putting someone that lightly framed into the ruck, but ever since the Goodes rule has been introduced it's nowhere near as important. It's all about height and timing rather than brute force.

The other options that have been raised in the aftermath were too valuable where they were. Thurstans has become the Power's #1 KPB in terms of form and current ability, while Chad Cornes (as suggested by Robert Walls) would've been reamed anyway.

In my opinion we were never going to win it by our tall forwards coming alive in those conditions. Especially one down with McGregor out. We were always only going to win through the efforts of our midfield. So given that, I'm not sure they would have lost much by moving Thurstans out of defence.

What were the scoring shots in the end? 8000 to 15?

Taking Thurstans out on more than just a casual basis (he did ruck a bit at one stage once the Clydesdale couldn't pull so much as a tin of light) would've exacerbated the tenuous situation in the back fifty ever further.

Westhoff was isolated like the property steward's hills hoist for long periods there - his guernsey and socks just fluttering in the breeze. Put him on the ball and let the Clydesdale come off for some oats and warm water.

Yeah, I'm not saying Thurstons was a better option. You're probably right that Westoff was more expendable. I just think Thurstans was another option, one of several, that they had. Who was he on? Welsh wasn't it? I'm sure they had other options for Welsh.

don't know, thought it was a pretty good idea.
