Interesting story on ABC's catalyst from a few nights ago.

Cliffs for those without a spare 15min:
- increases stickyness of the blood
- reduces response time of recovery of blood vessels
- may encourage heart palpitations etc.

What are your thoughts?

I don't like hot coffee so I tend to have a Red Bull instead of a coffee for my caffeine hit. I prefer the taste of Red Bull so don't drink any of the others. Usually SugarFree version too.

I did read somewhere that Energy Drinks don't actually give you any energy that they infact trick your brain into thinking you are getting energy from them probably BS though.

I've had 1 sip of a V before and is tasted like shit, so i've never had another energy drink.

Good news for me, I guess.

I have to admit I'm a little wary of them. I don't think enough research has been done into their effects. I find they do work though. I never really have them but recently knocked back a Red Bull while I was on a 12 hour road-trip and it certainly helped me push through the last few hours.

Reckon they will go down as this generation's cigarettes. The true effects won't be discovered for a few years yet.

They know exactly what they do.Just look at the ingredients and then research yourself how they lacerated kidneys and livers and the cardiovascular system..then there's the brain, all that shit in your blood goes into your brain.theres also the fact they offer nothing towards hydration while increasing your activity..just guessing but one energy drink a day could probably be worth a decade off your life depending what other bad habits you have...

I know people who've knocked back 3 or 4 a day since they were 14 or 15.

I try to avoid them, but usually end up having 1 or 2 a week to keep up with my schedule.

Energy Drinks are f*cked -

The only time I ever drink them is when I'm driving long hauls.. like Melbourne to Adelaide or something... Otherwise I steer clear of them completely...

My Dad lives on the Yorke Peninsula - A couple of years ago a kid from the high school died from cardiac complications. From all reports, he drank red bull like water, up to 4 or 5 cans a day. There were other issues too, in that he was overweight and probably had or was heading to diabetes too... But for a teenager to have some kind of heart failure is just straight out wrong...

There was a kid in my politics class last year who had a 500ml can of Mother every single class - He was an erratic nut bag who spoke so quickly that you couldn't understand him half the time. I ended up having to do a group project with him.. He made me laugh a lot but I think it was at him because he was so loose and all over the shop... Die-hard Young Liberal too - He ran for the environment officer ticket of the student union on an 'anti-recycling' campaign because the whole system 'ran on subsidies' and is too expensive..... He didn't win

Energy Drinks - Killing overweight teenagers and inspiring Young Liberal loonies

I was full on addicted from about ages 14-16. Then I just stopped. Now I rarely have them, and I no longer really enjoy them, the only one I like is Monsters Rehab, which has SFA sugar compared to the rest.

When I'm at uni and have to get up early constantly I become addicted to them. I've built up such a caffeine tolerance that I can drink a can of Mother and go to sleep without any problems. My heart is going to give out on me one of these days.

They're not actually that bad for you in my opinion unless you've got other things going on/drinking huge amounts. Would recommend people not drink them if asked though.

Tried them but that's about as far as I have gone. Not a fan of just getting the heart pumping a little faster, does nothing else IMO.

Sugar Free drinks could be a whole other topic. I started on them when I was doing a high protein/no sugar/low carb diet a couple of years back and have generally stuck with them (except for the Bourbon & Coke I'm drinking right now). Despite the benefits of cutting out sugar, there's the issue of aspartame.

steer clear. Although I do drink them, 1-2 a week though so not crazy quantities.

A guy I went to high school was on them in a big way during VCE, trying to get into Medicine. Was having more than one a day, every day for consistent periods. Developed some heart palpitations later on. Anything in moderation I guess, I don't see them as being any more harmful than a softie when had in moderation

I have 2 to 3 a week at work. Dont drink coffee. It definitely gives me a kick and red bull more so than v. Im sure its bad especially waking up the day after a night on red bull vodkas, your body is screaming enough. Thread could be a good medical research item see who is still posting in 10 years

Did someone say advertising?

Juice it. If you need energy in liquid form, that also comes with nutrients and is healthy, then juice. (nopeptide)

It's humorous to me that these things are popular and that parents buy them for their kids.
