England going forward

Was going to put this in another thread but figure there's probably enough interest around to make one of it's own. Was thinking about where England go from here, figure it's probably only a couple of months before the world cup qualifiers start. New manager, but what of the squad. For me:

Keepers
I think Hart, Butland, Heaton and Forster will all be around the squad, and will all get opportunities. With Hart getting near his 30's and a rubbish Euros behind him I think England will look to the next bloke, I reckon Butland will be pushed forward once he's fit again. For now, I'd have Hart still as number 1 but not secure in the spot at the moment. In the U21's are Jordan Pickford and Angus Gunn, I'd say both need to get into regular senior football for a good couple of seasons before even looking at taking the step up.

Defence
England's defence was pretty poor in the Euro's but I thought all the fullbacks came away as a positive. Walker cocked up for the first last night but had a good tournament and I think him, Rose, Clyne, Bertrand will all stick around the squad. Look to someone like Shaw to push into the squad as well. All a decent age and I don't see too many problems there.

Centre of defence was pretty awful but there isn't much in the way of younger players pushing for a spot. Expect Stones to be pushed forward, maybe at the expense of Cahill.

In the U21's I only see Targett and Chilwell standing out, but neither would be close at the moment. Couple of dark horses for me in the centre of defense are Tomori at Chelsea and Adarabioyo at City but both need to play senior footy before even thinking about national team.

Midfield
Don't expect too much change here. Alli, Sterling, Wilshere, Barkley all had poor tournaments (or no tournament) but are all pretty young and I'd be surprised to see any replaced. Dier had a decent tournament and pretty much the only one there that has nailed down a starting spot in midfield going forward. Henderson, Lallana and Milner will probably hang around but probably be phased out over the next few years.

Plenty of decent prospects coming through - Ward-Prowse, Loftus-Cheek (like a posh tea party there) probably the two to look out. And could another strong year put the likes of Drinkwater, or Walcott back in the frame?

Big question touched on before is Rooney. He'll stay, he'll be played every match and like at United he'll be shoehorned into whatever position they can find for him without any regard to team balance and performance. It's how it's going to be until he retires.

Forwards
Kane had a shocker, but he'll start the next campaign as first choice. Sturridge was also pretty poor but I don't think you can leave out someone with his quality. Vardy will hang around the squad as long as he is fit and I think now Rashford is in the squad he will stick around.

There's a lot of older players around the fringes of the senior team. Carroll, Ings, Deeney would all need to have strong seasons to force their way in. In the U21's, I'd love to see Tammy Abraham play senior football somewhere and force his way into the side.

Sure I've missed someone, but will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years.

As Cooksen says, Manager is the most important factor now. There is a good enough pool of players (not a deep one though) to at least be competitive. Perhaps a foreign manager with prem experience is the way to go - because I don't see a British or English Manager up to it. Maybe Howe but he is so young. Don't want Rodgers, I think he is a bit of an odd cat

Until they drop Rooney and start playing players based on performances rather than media hype the better they will be
Rooney had a meltdown last night, be he was arguably our best player in the group stages. As a captain though, I don't think he has those qualities

I felt sorry for him last night. He tried so bloody hard but was awful and as usual, he'll probably have to shoulder the blame. The front page of the Sun today was an absolute disgrace. A picture of his son crying ffs.

i think it goes deeper than a new manager. they need to **** dyke off and all those faceless men types who have let english football decline
You're right, the FA are a disgrace. Unlikely to ever be overhauled though

The England team will look really good in about 5 years time if the existing youngsters (Alli, Kane, Shaw, Sterlol, Rash) develop and guys like Ruben Loftus and Abrahams get games. The England U16's and 18's looks really good talent wise.

Das Reboot?

That's a bit shit. Media in general do more damage than good when it comes to the national team.

yeah that was really, really bad. hope he does something about it. the way the media have carried themselves throughout the tournament has been utterly disgraceful.

First step is to get a decent manager.

If wegner goes tomorrow the fa should get him as manager.
I mentioned this in the Euro 2016 thread but was ignored by all the plebs. Wenger would sort them out, make them into a real team. Hope he stays on at Arsenal though.

Have seen Bilic getting mentioned as a potential candidate and reckon he'd make a lot of sense with what he's done at the international level and now at West Ham, but can't see him leaving now.

Roberto Martinez would be hilarious on so many levels.

They're a reflection of the league.

There's barely, if any top 10 players in the EPL that are English.

Kane has a case possibly.

They have a way higher percentage of international players compared to the other major successful nations when looking at their home leagues.

You can bang on about the championship being the best second division in the world. But the Germans, Spanish and Italians still have a boatload of local players developing in good sides.

If they really wanted to improve the England side, they'd have to reduce the quality of the EPL and lower the cap of non trained players, even potentially bringing in a pure foreign cap all together.
