While out yesterday, found a little 2nd-hand bookshop in South Caulfield which had many of my most wanted. I am a huge hoarder and love finding things I used to have, even if they're stuff I had as a young'n.

This included "The Adventures Of The Wishing Chair" and "The Wishing Chair Again"!! Cannot wait to get stuck into them. I can only remember something about an ointment that was rubbed on the legs of the chair to grow the little wings.

They didn't have any of the Faraway Tree series, which I would also have snapped up had they been there.

Anyone else grow up with Enid?

Grew up with the Secret Seven and the Famous Five

Anyone remember the TV series on the ABC?

The Famous Five....yes!

Embarassing...but my brother, sister and I used to get our little torches when we were younger and crawl under our couch pretending we were on a Famous Five adventure....
Kids have no imagination these days!

Had a rather huge collection of Enid Blyton books when I was a child. I used to read them every night in bed before I went to sleep.

I was disappointed when the books were changed due to "political correctness" but that's the way of the world now. I would recommend any parent to pass these books to their kids.

Fitzy above me is correct when saying kids have no imagination these days, most of it is left at the play station.

I have got away with reading very very few books in my life, but I did happen to read a few from the Secret Seven series when I was younger. In fact, the first book I ever read was a Secret Seven one.

What about the "mr pink whistle" books. No-one seems to have heard of them.

Im starting to think they were a childhood imagination

nah there is such a thing as mr pink whistle lol!!

i like the secret seven and famous five too, and the naughiest girl in the school as well!

I can still hear that theme song from the TV show...

"We are the Famous Five
Julian, **** and Anne
George and Timmy the Dog!"

YES! I remember that. I think another part went...

"Whenever there's a mystery to be solved"
"Just leave a clue and leave the rest to the famous five"

The episode I remember the best was when smugglers gave Timmy the dog a piece of poisoned meat :(

I adored the Enchanted Wood/Faraway Tree series when I was a kid. I was also into Mr Pink Whistle and The 3 Golliwogs who were called Wiggie, Waggie and Wolly.

They were?????

And yes - I grew up on Enid Blyton books as well. (in particular, the Enchanted/Faraway series, Adventurous Four (and "Again!"), the Wishing Chair etc...)

Yeah re PC, I think they're talking about the Noddy books. They were definitely calmed down.

Yep! :) I still collect her books :)

My husband bought me the entire Famous Five collection for my birthday last year :)

I remember the books and TV show from when I was about 6 or 7 (this was in 82). I also remember getting a Famous Five record. There was no singing, it was a Famous Five story with actors.

Five on Treasure Island or something...I think it had the actors from the show providing the voices. I think it was their first adventure with George (Georgina wanted to be just like one of the boy's) and Timmy. they went out for ice cream and got stranded out a sea or something. I may still have it somewhere.

Just a few days ago, I managed to pick up 3 illustrated Enid Blyton books.

The Enchanted Wood
The Faraway Tree
The Folk Of The Faraway Tree.

$10 each. :)

That was always my favourite series. I've still got the old hard-covers lying around in a box somewhere too......

THERE IS NO **** IN THE BIGFOOTY.COM VERSION OF FAMOUS FIVE!

But seriously now,

Famous Five, Secret Seven, Three Investigators. All faves as a child. Then there were the Lucky Starr novels by Asimov.

Stainless Steel Rat as I grew older and got the jokes.

Is it just my memory playing tricks or did all those Famous Five tales always seem to involve 'smugglers' as the villains?

Three Investigators! Got about 20 of them here .. but that;s another story.

On great children's authors, you can't go past Roald Dahl, they were my son's favourites, especially "The Twits", couldn't believe that his grade 2 teacher banned him from taking it to school, as she said it wasn't suitable reading for children.
