I also bought it last night, haven't had much chance to play it yet, but my first impressions are good. I love the realisim with espn, I love how you can draw the charge. When players are fouled it is very realistic, diving for the loose ball is great aswell.

Also love the fast break, when I played Ea's Nba live and your on a fast break you would always get run down (I've only played 2002 haven't played 03, 04 so they may have corrected this)

General field shooting seems to be realistic, no shooting 70% - 80% everygame and ending with 180 point score lines in 12 minute quarters.

I'm going to try to get out of work early today to head home and play it.

EA is beating Sega this year again in sales. Madden 2004 has mauled ESPN NFL in sales in the US, as it does every year. Madden 2004 is a better NFL game than ESPN NFL.

ESPN NHL Hockey is the best hockey game available without a doubt. EA NHL 2004 looks nice, but the passing is crap, and the goalies are even worse. And ESPN NBA Basketball is still a ways ahead of NBA Live 2004 despite some improvements at EA.

I've read that NBA Inside Drive 2004, despite being ugly and with limited options, gametypes, sounds, animations etc. has the most realistic basketball engine, but i've not played this game cos MS sports games usually stink (think NFL Fever, NHL Rivals, previous versions of NBA inside drive).

NBA Inside Drive '03' was the best basketball game, there was like nba 2k3 which had the most realistic look, but Inside drive just had that something special.

I cannot wait for the new one to be released on x-box, I think it's due our next week or around that time.

Rubbish. ESPN Football is lightyears ahead of Madden 2004. Far better graphics, physics, replays, commentary, franchise mode, and general onfield atmosphere. ESPN also has 1st person football mode, which is surprisingly good. Alround i'd say that ESPN Football is without a doubt the best sports game made to date, and IMO one of the top 5 Xbox games.

Also ESPN Football is the only of the 2 with Xbox live multiplayer. Enough said.

light years ahead?
I doubt you've even played either game. Madden 2004 has the most indepth franchise mode ever in a sports game. The owner mode is huge and lets you adjust everything from prices, concessions, parking, sponsorship, facilities, you can even design and build a new stadium, reloacte the team to another city. ESPN Franchise mode does not come close....

Madden is online for PS2, ESPN is online for PS2 and Xbox. Even on xbox without online play, Madden 2004 is the biggest selling NFL game in the US. ESPN has better atmosphere. The ESPN NFL primetime and ESPN stats and animations are great, leave Madden for dead. While its good to have Madden and Michaels of Monday Night Football, the Madden games need a makeover in presentation. Gameplay graphics are pretty similiar. Physics in Madden are more robust. In ESPN blitzing is a piece of pi ss, there are sacks galor. It was the same problem in NFL 2k1 on the Dreamcast, and they still haven't fixed it. The running game is far to strong in ESPN. Small RB's plough through the defense. Players running looks gay as well. Passing is better in Madden also. The number of one handed catches in ESPN is an absolute joke also.

Finally what secures Madden as #1 is the new playmaker option using the right thumbstick. Terrific invention and gives you much more control over your team. You will see ESPN, Gameday and Fever adopt this in 2005.

ESPN is a good effort and I agree the fp mode is suprisingly good, but Madden 2004 is just ahead as an NFL game. Longtime, hardened NFL gamers like myself agree

Well, actually I own ESPN football (yes, on import), and my bro has both ESPN and Madden 2004. My brother, a hardened Madden fanatic made the switch to ESPN this year after I loaned him my copy. Have you seen the Xbox version of ESPN? Because other than the lack of online franchise (something Madden doesn't have anyway) It's far superior to it's PS2 counterpart, especially graphically.

Sales don't mean sh¡t. If they do then Justin Timberlake is one of the most talented musicians in the world.

The heads were big in Madden 2003. The player models in 2004 are fine.

fyi i've got Madden 2004, ESPN NFL Football and ESPN NHL Hockey on xbox.

Of course sales dont mean **** i mean just because Anna Kournikova has sold more personal posters in the world than anyother female athelete does not warrant her being 1 of the best looking females.
No of course sales mean **** all your 100% right  .
For the record Madden 2004 is a killer a game, i won both ESPN and Madden and the new M2004 whipes the floor with espn.

Typo you gimp 'own'. Now off you go hermit!!!

I've had them both for the past couple of months. I've loved Madden for years, has been the mojor redeaming game for EA the past couple of years.
Madden improved a bit this year, but I still rather play ESPN more often than Madden.

I know this is a particullary stupid question, but I have Madden 04 and get frustrated because I suck at defence. Does ESPN have a better defence game, do the CB's get burnt too much? In Madden my players never get over 10 tackles and it's rare I get over 8. When I jump for interceptions or knockdowns the timing is out and the animation is nothing I want it to be (I.e the WR is in front of me and I press the button and my CB seems to just stop and jump straight into the air) I just get frustrated to the point I quit the game and start again in hope that my defence will be better.
ALSO! Unless you change the camera angle (which gets very annoynig), you cannot see your CB's which elimnates them from being controlled when your on defence (I like to control the CB because the better receivers always seem to burn me, I cannot trust the automatically controlled players).

better defense???
The defense is fine in Madden 2004. Its the same in ESPN NFL. sounds like you just suck. defense is hard. it takes a lot of practice. anyone can score touchdowns. but the good players stop touchdowns.

Spike the ball, don't try and catch it. Use the L and R triggers to get front on. Makes it easier. Use the right thumbstick to change the direction of your safety's and linsemen. Pick a defensive formation that matches up against the offensive formation. You have to try and guess who the primary recievers are and cover them. Bat the ball down when it gets near you. But more than anything practice.
