Should be a good matchTHE Essendon Football Club will today donate $50,000 to the Bushfire Appeal to help those affected in Bendigo’s Black Saturday fires on February 7.Essendon managing director Peter Jackson will make the donation at the Queen Elizabeth Oval today, as part of the Bendigo Football Unites Bushfire Appeal Game between the Bendigo Bank Bombers and the Bendigo Football League All-Stars.
Jackson said Essendon was connected to the region through its VFL affiliate club, the Bendigo Bombers, and wanted to help.
Sixty-one homes, 122 sheds and one life were lost in Bendigo’s western suburbs on Black Saturday.
“Hundreds of people were directly affected by Bendigo’s fire front and Essendon simply wants to help because we feel we are part of this community,” Jackson said yesterday.
“The local community has provided so much support to Essendon and the Bendigo Bombers and it’s important we give something back during this time of need.
“We have held a number of fundraising activities and many people at the club have worked hard to raise this money and we hope it will help.”
The $50,000 was raised by auctioning off signed player guernseys and shorts from the NAB Cup Bushfire Appeal game against the Western Bulldogs on February 13, through collections at Windy Hill, and donations raised at the recent Windy Hill Family Fair and Beyond Sport outlet at Etihad Stadium.
As well as the $50,000 donation, there will be a strong Essendon presence at today’s footy feast at the QEO.
Ten Essendon-listed players have been named to play for the Bendigo Bombers against the BFL All-Stars, while members of Essendon’s coaching staff, including head coach Matthew Knights, will play in the curtain-raiser celebrity-business match.
And a number of Essendon players will take part in a junior game, which will be the second of the three matches to be played today.
Later in the week, Essendon will return to the QEO on Friday night to take on North Melbourne in a NAB Challenge Match in front of what promises to be a bumper crowd.
Today’s Bendigo Football Unites program at the QEO: 3-3.50pm - Celebrity-business match.
4-4.50pm - Junior match.
5-7pm - Bendigo Bombers v Bendigo Football League All-Stars.
Entry is adults $10, children under-14 free.
Gates will open at 2.30pm.
All money raised to go to the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Bushfire Appeal
