Essendon 12.6.78 def Northern Blues 9.10 64.
They managed to hang on for a win. It was a 1 point game for about 10 minutes in the last quarter. Terrible game that was matched by the worst umpiring I have ever seen in over 30 years of watching VFL/VFA .
It was like watching an under 14 game and if the Blues had better skills they would have won. For most of the game we roamed around in a pack with no spread and no idea. It was hard to watch.
Hartley was good. Got an injury in the first 5 minutes but came back on and was clearly not 100% but stood up in defence all day.
Ridley was also good under pressure in the back half. Without these two we would have been dead in the water.
Clarke got a lot of the ball but he will not make it. When he has to kick under pressure it is horrible. It is a shame as he can find the ball and does have some outside game as well.
Much was patchy. Some good stuff but struggle to get outside into space.
Moynott is looking a bit tired . Still does some okay stuff but it seems the season has caught up with him.
Long had a slow start but did get involved as the game went on but he made some bone head errors and just does not get to the outside enough.
Houlahan kicked 3 in possibly his best game but I am not sure he was best 6 as reported. He goes missing for long periods and is as loose as a wizzards sleeve when it comes to defending. At least it was an improvement on his previous efforts which did not amount to a lot.
Draper was okay in the ruck but he sooks it up for too long when a free is payed against him. Still he shows a few things across the course of the game that you just have to like.
Zerk took a few good marks. He looks to have something to work with but he does need to work on staying in the moment and not dropping off concentration wise.
Green played like a big green spud. Looks like he has bee at the hot dog stand. Get the fork out.
Jacko was uninspiring as well.
Stewart was like he has been for the last 6 weeks. Double teamed a lot. Frustrated. At times just giving away dumb free kicks and leading under the ball or not at all. Did take the crunch mark and kick the goal that got us out to a 7 point lead late in the game.
