The heirachy at essendon were big fans of IRA members Michael Collins, Tom Barry and the whole irish independance movement...hence the name bombers.

There was also a period in the 50's when they were called The Gliders, but they went back to the Bombers as the word Gliding had connotations of taking things easy.
