The HS are reporting that Woosha has said their number 1 pick (or their first pick 1-3 at this stage) is up for a trade to get in a key forward.

Do you think we could package something up, involving Cloke to get this pick?

He is on the wrong side of the age divide, but would still have another 5 years in the AFL.

I could see a three way trade being facilitated involving us, Essendon and Fremantle

We would trade Cloke (and someone else, Witts maybe) and receive Freemantles first pick 1-3. Essendon trade their first pick to Freemante and receive Cloke and Witts. Freemantle trade their first pick and recieve Essendons first pick, moving up in the draft order.

This will help Fremantle secure Cam McCarthy, having a better pick to trade. Obviously this only works if Fremantle finish higher than Essendon, if they don't they're redundant in this.

You can't trade two blokes who are playing VFL football and expect to receive a 1-3 draft pick. It's just not reality. If we wanted to get that high in the draft we are going to have to trade quality. And I just think we have the quality, that we are willing to let go.

Witts was an example. They do need a ruckman though, and if it wasn't for Grundy, he would be our first choice. But I get what you mean.

Never change Bigfooty.

You do know Adrian Dodoro is Essendon's recruiting manager???

indeed - Essendon are notoriously difficult to deal with - see the Carlisle trade last year as an example

They'd probably want Pendlebury, Treloar & Sidebottom for the #1 pick.

It's not even a number 1 pick anyway, with the academy players rated in the top 4-5 you no longer have first pick of the absolute best talent.

Essendon will find it hard to trade it away for anything major, pick 1 isn't what it used to be.

And no, we won't even enquire about it, we don't have anything of worth (that we want to get rid of) that could be used to trade for it.

They'll be looking for a mid 20s type player, not a 30yo that can't get a run in a bottom team. They'd want a Sidebottom level player.

So Gault then? :p:D

Only way we could orchestrate Cloke for pick 1 is package in a first rounder with him. Effectively Essendon get Cloke and pick say 10-16.

Not only that but pick 1 has very seldom turned out to actually be the best player in the draft, hell some drafts they aren't even in the top 5.

Clubs are more wary of the pick 1 for half your club trap.

Why would we involve Fremantle for s pick upgrade when all it does is worsens both our and Essendon's positions?

The talk of Essendon wielding power over the number 1 draft pick all the while smirking about being a top 6 list (Worsfold) I find distasteful, and that's the first feeling to begin with, it's followed with a dose of outrage. With the exception of Hibbard they have gotten nearly everyone back of importance as far as the suspended 12 goes. Prior to this on a moral basis they should not have the number 1 pick anyway. The AFL should push their Round selection, so it starts at 10, and they are 10th in line for all the other round selections.

Whatever though as this won't happen because the AFL obviously want Essendon back up the ladder and they don't want any more bad publicity, pushing them down the order will just add to the bad publicity of this whole saga. Anyway, I agree with Mattys about pick 1, it is overrated, as are draft picks in general. Lets have a look at the last 10 or so number 1 picks.

2015) Weitering - superstar trade value (tv)- two first rounders
2014.) McCartin - long way yo go - (tv) first rounder 5-10 would get the job done.
2013.) Boyd - Now probably isn't in the top 20 of a superdraft. (tv) 5-15
2012.) Whitfield - Exciting, promising, not in the best ten players at GWS though B plus player. (tv) 5-10
2011.) Patton - injuries prone, about a C grader. (tv) 15-25
2010.) Swallow - Injuries prone - B grader when on song. (tv) 5-15
2009.) Scully - Had a disappointing career so far, hitting his straps now, B grader. (tv) 10-20 much improved this year.
2008.) Watts - not in the top twenty of a superdraft (tv) 15-25 much improved this year.
2007.) Kreuzer - injury prone, average plodding ruck-man. B- Grader (tv) 20-30
2006.) GIbbs - Gun player on his day took a long time to come good. - B plus grader - (tv) 5-15 to a challenger.

It shows that the number 1 draft pick is overrated unless you know there's a Luke Hodge in their. Draft experts say there is no standout, plus the oning consession dominating the first few picks. I do think that our recruiters are far too smart to go near it. Better of trading into the top ten somewhere.

Of the last ten number 1 draft pick not 1 is in the top fifty players in the league. OK maybe Gibbs at a stretch but that's about it. Weitering will be a top ten player in time.

Agreed, Weitering sucks. :drunk:

I think they might be aiming their 'offer' at GWS

Plausible, but I reckon GCS in a deal involving O'Meara perhaps?
You'd think GWS would not be interested in pick 1 this year considering they already have 3 first rounders, plus there's a greater exodus coming out of the Gold Coast, and Brisbane, coming out of Queensland.
