With all the talk about getting Akermanis, should we get an established player that would add a great deal to our side.

Or should we keep our top picks and go for kids and try and find our own Akermanis?

You can do both Mase.

I dont think we should ever trade our first pick, especially in years where we finish outside the 8. But a deal with Brisbane by trading similar aged players (eg Nicks and Seymour) is not bad management.

In 2004/05 the midfield will be our most vunerable position. I think we need to look at that as our priority in the coming trade/drafts.

That would be the ideal outcome for us, but I dont think Matthews will accept that kind of deal. I would think at least our 1st pick and one of our youngsters, and then maybe some more would be to Leigh's liking. I think the Lions showed last year in regards to the Headland situation that they won't be screwed around with.

I agree that is the sort of deal that I would want us to come up with.
But if we have to give up our 1st Round Pick to get him, I am not interested. And going on what Brisbane did last season with Headland, I fear this is the sort of deal they would expect (especially considering they wouldn't take players for him as they would be releasing him due to cap pressure).

Time will tell ...

As discussed in the AFL thread, i think Akermanis will be a target for your club no doubt.

Now, considering that if things go well this season, your club might forgo the first round pick because from all accounts, the draft isnt flash this season and with priority picks for the lowly clubs, your first pick may be at pretty late and not worth it....

2 x Premiership player and Brownlow Medallist is worth a late first round pick IMO

This is the perfect situation for a 3 way sorta deal. You would trade someone to a club, they would give their first round pick to the lions and lions akermanis to you. Of course it wouldnt be this simple as other players and picks would be involved, but it would be a way for you to get Aker and not lose a first round and for Brisbane to get a first round plus someone else from somewhere.

Who would we trade to get a first round pick for? Nicks is a handy player but at 28 he won't have many years left. Seymour is injury-prone and won't have much value either.
