Playing local casino game, with a newbie dealer. (So new the main guy stood behind him for half an hour).

A few hands in, he's dealing when a player's card flips up.

Not over, so that the table could see, but enough that I knew he had a red face card. Thought it was Jh, but not sure.

What should I have done? What should the dealer have done?

...

FWIW, I didn't speak until it was my turn to bet, one bet, one call allready into the pot. I said I know your card (they laughed), I said I was serious and asked the dealer if I should say what it is. He said no, and we played the hand out.

I folded with junk, the guy in question won, with two pair and King kicker. He had the Jack of Hearts.

Soon after the dealer swapped, though that may have just been coincidental.

What should have happened?

Surely the guy doesn't show his card, and this is how it should have played out.

Consider if he was made to show what you thought to be the Jack of hearts, but it was actually the Ace of hearts, he would be pretty pissed as would I in that situation.

Furthermore if you just announce that it is the Jack of hearts, and other players make their play based on what is actually a wrong assumption from you - tension could rise. (Though truth be told it'd be their own fault for letting your word effect their own game)

I'd be very suprised if the dealer did not make the right call...

EDIT: Btw was this at the Hobart Casino?

If so, can you give a short account of what the standard of play is like there. Also do they only offer limit or is there also NL? (Pretty sure I read in the 'other casino' threads its only limit, but just wondering if its changed.

It was Launceston. and yeah it's limit only. I was there for a friend of the wife's birthday, and popped out for half an hour.

From what I can tell it's only 1-2 tables, once a week. I'm told you had to book a seat, and had done so before, but when I walked over to have a look there were only two guys playing, so I joined in. Perhaps if you want to play at 7:30 you book, otherwise you wait for gaps.

I'm a pretty bad player (make money online at minor stakes (<$1), lose as soon as I hit >2$ blinds), but I go pretty well at the casinos, as playing limit means the math becomes much more important than the psychology (I make some AMAZINGLY bad reads online)

....

On this one, I didn't announce his card, I just said "I saw your card" - initially to him, and then to the dealer, who said not to say what it was and just play on.

I did, and folded (though I had nothing, 4/9 off-suit or similar and would have folded regardless).

He didn't show until he had to, once I folded there were only two left in, and they bet/called the flop, check/checked the turn and bet/called the river.

I guess my presumption was the whole deal would be cancelled, and bets/calls returned - I was just suprised when I was basically told to 'shut up' and play the hand.

a player's card flashed

This happens occasionally, and the dealer will usually notice that the card flashed to one or more players. I guess the question is how sure are you that you saw it? You say Jh, maybe it was Qh or Kd. If you're fairly confident, speak up asap, that is, while the dealer is still dealing. Or say nothing, you might be wrong.

Probably because you waited until it was your turn. If you see a card and want to speak up you should do so straight away.

You don't have to know the exact card but if you say its a red picture it would be all over.

True but if he says a card then it is also a misdeal if the person has already picked up both cards as the dealer can't just exclude 1 card by guessing.

I thought I played NL there last year.

Pretty ordinary play IIRC. I had a fairly profitable time there:thumbsu:

Pretty Ordinary? I'd think closer to woeful.

I'm a poor player, but most of the guys I've seen playing are there by coincidence - at least half aren't "poker players", just wanting some fun.

How do Tasmanian casinos get around the one-player per hand rule, you know, with everyone having two heads?

Sorry, it's late :o

Funnily enough, drove past two pubs tonight, both of which had big banners out the front promoting poker events next week.

That takes the # of poker venues I know of in Lonny from 2 to 4!!!
