Hey guys,

Haven't really used Excel in a long time and have forgotten a lot of its functions. Am currently running a top 100 BF video games of all time thread here (feel free to join in...completely shameless self-promotion!) and was just wondering if there was a way to sort entire rows based off of the data value in a single cell of that row.

For example - at the moment, I have each game in a row, and each person's votes in a column. Then I have a column at the end (BG) which adds the points together. Is it possible to "cheat" a little bit, I guess, and sort the rows in numerical order based on the value in column BG? Would certainly be easier than having to check through almost 500 rows and work out what's ranked where manually like I have been doing.

Cheers. :thumbsu:

Yes, you can do that.

Highlight the column, select Sort A-Z. It will ask you if you wish to extend the range. Always say yes to take in the rest of the columns.

Easy.

Cheers guys, but neither of those seem to work. I'm running Mac, so that might change a few things (should've said that, sorry).

Messenger - I have a Sort A-Z button, but when I hit it the columns flash and then nothing happens. If I go through the menu, Data > Sort, I can select to sort the column in descending numerical order, but then nothing happens again. Strange.

Brown Bottle - I can't for the life of me work out what the Mac alternative to Alt-D-S is, haha.

In Mac it's command instead of Alt

Mmmm sorry, don't use a Mac. I know my shortcuts for tasks like this so never really use menu options, but I think this would translate to:

Ctrl-A = Select All
Alt-D-S = (from toolbar menu) Data - Sort

That should bring up a window where you can select which column(s) to sort by, and what you want to sort it by.

Aha, I got it - I was using the right menu options, just didn't select all.

Thanks a lot mate. :thumbsu:
