This could be a very, very sucessful trade period if the Hawks play their cards right. We could gain:

1.Trent Croad for pick 11 (Great CHB who can go forward if needed. Fremantle will pay part of his salary and his form should improve playing for his beloved hawks with less pressure)

Quite Likely

2.Nathan Brown for Jade Rawlings (Quality young player who is what the hawks need-consistent goal scorer at ground level)

Possible (due to the fact that Richmond can't offer bulldogs enough and Brown in the draft will see him go to Carlton- Brown would prefer Hawthorn)

3. pick 13 (I think) for Harford and BJ. (This will provide enough cap relief to afford Brown and keep signed hawks happy. Still a relatively early pick.)

Likely.

Hawks therefore have Brown+Croad+pick 13 for Rawlings, Harford, BJ and pick 11.

This could turn us into SERIOUS premiership contenders.

no team would ever agree to giving away pick 13 for Harford and BJ.

the croad thing rings true - although it'd be pick 10 (i think)

again, with nathan brown - richmond seems most likely, but that said, they managed to screw the whole dean solomon thing up, so i wouldn't put anything past them.

Likely.

Why would Essendon (pick 13) want Harford? He's too slow and costs to much money - especially when they are still offloading players to stay under the cap and taking draft picks.

Harford and Johnson look like they are off to Carlton for a 3rd or 4th round pick. Don't know if I am happy with that - maybe Harford only but not Johnson as well.

I don't think we should jump the gun, with these trades the hawks would be formidable but i just think croad will be the only one which happens. Really liked him as a player in brown and gold.
Still think the roos will play everything out to get rawlings. Time is ticking we won't have to wait too long

Brett Johnson should not be traded. Point taken about Mitchell, Ries, Picioane.
However, consider Brett has not been given a chance.
He stars at Box Hill, is promoted and sits out games on the bench. He has heaps
of skill, both sides of his body.
If only he is given a fair chance. Remember in Sydney when he came off the
bench and snapped a brilliant goal when the Swans started to look dangerous
and get back into the game. Brett’s goal was just the tonic needed to spur the
Hawks onto a great win against a very strong Swans side.

It wasn’t the first time Brett has played well when he comes on the ground -
doesn’t matter how he goes, he is usually dragged back to the bench - retain him
and give him a go - he loves the Hawks!

Have to disagree to an extent here Gary. BJ never really stars at BH, he is a very consistent player though. Gets his fair share of the ball etc. Basically plays the same game at either AFL or VFL level.

He has heaps of skill, both sides of his body.

His right sides very (being kind here) average. Agree he has been given limited opportunity. Needs to work his way into a game to be effective. However he isn't very accountable for his (though he is better than he was) direct opponent. Can tend to 'drift' on occassion and in essence, theres still other options that make it difficult for him to be given that chance.

Yea but the dragging to the bench is part of Schwabs 'game-plan'. Mitchell was struggling with it too. Until Schwab finally left him out there for a few games.. and the results spoke for themselves.

BJ is gone mate, were lucky in someways that we do have options to cover him. Will wish him luck cause Ive always liked the kid but footys a tough game and we need to get footballers in to cover areas (KP, Ruck, KP, KP... ) where we aren't as strong (centremen).

Much of your reply, Grendel, is good reasoning and I have taken it aboard, but your comment about Sam Mitchell strenghens my point, Brett was worthy of being given more opportunities at the higher level. It is interesting your take on Swabb’s style.

I agree though, Brett is gone, it appeared so during the the Hawks horror patch of season ‘03 when he should have been considered but wasn’t.

Coming off the bench at the at SCG, after sitting there for most of the first half in 7 degree freezing conditions, would not have been easy, he turned it on to help put the Swans away after the latter were turning their game around.

Sorry guys! I misread the news. Harford and BJ will be traded for a 3rd round pick to Carlton. Not quite as sweet, but you can't have everything.
