Eveyone knows the league has to expand to at least Perth (again) and one day Adeliade but if this is to be so should a new team be created or should a current NRL team move to Perth or Adeliade? the sharks perhaps. what are your thoughts?

It'll never happen, now that Perth have a union team. These states will be dominated by AFL for ever.

If there is even the slightest chance of a team established in either capital the i i would suggest a new franchise as it gives more of a feeling of a home grown team instead of team from abroad, similar to Sydney in teh AFL and what the Kangaroos hope to become on the gold coast.

Come 2010 there will be an active interest from the NRL to look into new markets, with WA and Southern NZ being the targets...

The NRL is still hopeful of a Sydney relocation to the Central Coast

in order of immediate viability:

1. Central Coast, NSW
2. Perth, WA
3. Wellington, NZ
4. Sunshine Coast, Qld
5. Christchurch, NZ
6. Adelaide, SA
7. Port Moresby, PNG

are all possible expansion options in the future.

What's your obsession with expansion to Adelaide and Perth? You even joined up to LU the other day just to post this question.

IMO these two locations (in particular Adelaide), are as important potential expansion locations as Dunedoo and Colinsville.

okay mate your right, I just wanted a NRL fans opinion.
Frankly I couldn't care now about expansion anyway. my dream of a "truly national" NRL and AFL competition definately wont happen in the near future :( (or ever) so now I shall enjoy both games for what they are and be thankful that at least I'm one of few who actually loves both codes. don't expect me to bring up this matter in the future here on bigfooty, LU or any where for that matter

Agreed!!! Sharks to move to Perth IMO and the Roosters to the Central Coast (They have a huge following there)...:D :thumbsu:
Sharks are a waste of space and time... St George can re-take that area and the Rooster's well enough said..:p

Central Coast would be the logical option. Southern NZ would be an Interesting one, but i think overall would struggle.
IMO, Port moresby would be brilliant:D

a-league might

IMO

1. Central Coast (2010)
2. Southern NZ (2010 - half the games at Wellington, half at Christchurch?)
3. Perth (2014)
4. Second Brisbane (2014)
5. Adelaide (future)

I expect that at least a few current Sydney teams will have disappeared/merged by then.

This attitude is exactly why the AFL will always be greater than the NRL. The AFL have taken risks in Queensland and NSW, which have paid off (780 mil TV deal.)

The AFL will have a 2nd team in NSW by 2015, and probably Queensland too. The NRL are continuing to try to strengthen there heartlands instead of trying to appeal to more people, which puts them on the back foot.

The NRL have buggered up badly, they should have kept the teams from Adelaide and Perth, gee look at the Sydney Swans, back in the day they would struggle to get crowds, but the AFL kept at it and now it's proven to be a success.

The NRL can pretty much forget about Adelaide and Perth now, they had there chance and the blew it, if they had any balls they would bring them back and let them establish themselves fully.

But 0.1% of the country actually care about the A-league, i have number of mates that love soccer but they don't give a **** about the A-league, they choose to follow European leagues.

I was referring to the posters point over a national competition. The A-League and the NBL could have teams in every major city. The AFL won't have teams in Gosford, Wollongong or Newcastle anytime soon and the NRL won't be in Perth, Adelaide or Geelong, while the A-L and the NBL could be.

Completely untrue that "the league has to expand to at least Perth (again) and one day Adelaide".

The reward of $780 mil for TV rights has been due to the risks taken in Sydney and Brisbane and ongoing commitment to developing these new frontiers. Put simply, AFL expansion to Sydney and Brisbane and NRL expansion to Adelaide and Perth aren't even in the same ballpark when it comes to the reward for such expansion.

Exactly Littleduck.
As for the Swans becoming poular because of all the hard work by the AFL what a load of c**p, I think you will find the super league war and the flow on effects had something to do with their increase in popularity. You may have two teams in Sydney by 2015 but you will only have one by 2020. Good luck.

Super League created an opening. It took hard work and significant financial commitment from the AFL to capitalise on RLs weak period.

Incidentially, at the time RL was warring amongst itself, Rugby was still amateur and soccer was a shambles. In reality, it was a combination of all 3 codes being in a shambles at that time which allowed AFL to capitalise. Full marks to AFL though for seeing an opportunity that a blind man could see, but even more marks in my view for such a wholehearted commitment to northern expansion, even at the expense a little of the Victorian heartland.

The fact remains AFL has never gone head2head with any code anywhere at any time in history, taken them on and won in a fair fight. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it just shows the inherent superiority argument and the view that you only need to be "exposed" to the game to realise its inherent superiority is nonsense.

You are an idiot.....A Fair fight WTF....the fair fight is being alive.....Its not the AFLs fault that the NRL are retarted and the NSL was ****.....The AFL won and is still winning and will win for decades to come cuz the NRL will only win 2 state if that whilst the AFL could win 6-7 states/territories and the A-League isnt on at the same time as the AFL so thats not even a problem

Come on mate...

This is how it will always be, with Niche markets for all other codes in the other states...

RL = ACT, NSW, QLD
AR = TAS, VIC, SA, WA
Split = NT

Do the population math, and work it out

A-League even though in a different time (slight cross over) will still affect the other football codes through the corporate and public dollar... There are only so many bucks to go around

the nrl is doomed if they concentrate in nsw and qld. expanding to nz would be quite stupid cos its union territory. afl took risks with brisbane and sydney and it has paid off. in my honest opinion the nrl are pussies for keeping the game in their states. taking risks usually do pay off. i guarantee you if the nrl does become national rather than tasman it would pay off but afl will always be the most superior sport in this country.

Eventually, the NRL will be a 20 team competition with teams in Perth, Adelaide, Gosford and Wellington. It's a matter of waiting the requisite amount of time before doing so - the mistake with the first expansions was that they tried to do too much, too fast. Canberra, Illawarra, Brisbane, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Auckland, South Queensland, North Queensland, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hunter all within 17 years of each other was more than the sport could sustain, Superleague wars or not.

18 maybe, but never 20!

with teams in Perth...
maybe.

Adelaide...
never.

Gosford...
absolutely, but only via a relocation from Sydney. there will never be another NSW-based team.

and Wellington...
absolutely.

Assuming there was an 18-team competition, the additional 2 teams would be from Wellington and either South East Queensland or Perth.

probably right.
