My main expectation of the 2023 AFL season is for Adam Treloar not to mention how much he loves the Collingwood football club

I think Adz will have a big year. But be prepared to have have all his pressers and media appearances dominated by questions about Dunkley.

And with that in mind, I wouldn't have him do one until late next year if at all.

Better run with injuries and we will go much further but mostly I think we have lost the passion we need and this needs to be addressed.

Injuries sound like an excuse but if you lose your full forward and full back (Keath was clearly caring something all year and a shadow of him fit and firing the year before - it is not age - he should still be in his prime) and Bont carrying the hip would seriously impact any team. English was not the same after injury- neither was Weightman. Neither was Hunter. Also an alarming drop off by Macrae but no idea if that had anything to do with injury.

Look at Geelong and Sydney - they had one or two during the year but not that impact. Do better on this alone and we contend.

Noting that Keath may have ongoing injuries then L. Jizz should expose us much less. Assuming we get:

  • Lobb, LJizz
  • three new kids in the draft (two first round - including and another at 30)
  • one trade in let’s say Stocker (who I like)

And we lose 6 or:

  • Dunkley, JJ
  • Butler, Martin, Cordy or Schache
  • Maybe TOB or Parker

Weightman Bruce Lobb
García JUH West

English Bont Libba
Hunter Macrae Trelor

Jones Naughton Dale
Richards Keath Duryea

Darcy Smith McLean (Humphrey)

Also get Hayes and a young ruckman/forward and Stocker as a replacement to Duryea eventually (even though I think Roarke Smith and Scott or maybe Khamis could be good for it).

Dunkley only solid loss.

McLean, García, Jones and Lobb are all ups a dangerous young small forward could really add something.

With OK run by injuries - Seems like a pretty good team.

I think we can put together a a good to very good list on paper. Where we finish will be determined by coaching, game style, game plan, work rate, injury and above all playing for each other as a cohesive unit.

- A better coaching group.

- A better defensive structure.

- Players not moved to 3-4 different positions.

- A better forward structure.

- Stef Martin to not be on our list.

- Tim English to be consistent.

- Playing Richmond at Marvel.

Assuming we land Jones and Lobb, we also need a coaching overhaul and a complete review of the game plan.

We need to give certain players some better opportunities.

Best 22 for 2023:

Duryea Jones Kamis
Richards Keith Dale
Bebendo Macrae Cleary
JJ Naughton B.Smith
Weightman JUH Lobb

English Bont West

Libba, Treloar, Daniel, Darcy

Next: Garcia, Gardner, Williams, McLean, Bruce

I hope we completely overhaul our defensive structure and ball movement because that fwd line looks dangerous with some natural improvement from Weightman and JUH.

I hope we play West as an inside mid and would like to also try Garcia as a small lockdown defender to replace Duryea. We just need to play Bebendo, Kamis and Cleary and the balance looks right with height, leg speed and grunt. I am backing in Keath after a big pre season, otherwise Gardner comes in.

Have I missed anyone ?

Perhaps purely coincidental, but the last time we finished in the top four (2010) was the last time we had a 16 team competition. We've failed to finish any higher than 5th since the expansion teams joined.

With that said, I'm tipping with Gold Coast's first finals appearance, we'll see our first top four finish since the 17/18 team competition commenced.

If you're an Essendon supporter reading this, your drought won't coincide with these two droughts. You'll probably have to wait another 30 years until you win a final.

Realistically there is no reason why we cant be a top 4 team. Choked 2 games against the Cats with 1 bad quarter in each game killing us, Beat each of Melbourne, Sydney and Collingwood. Choke again against Freo but dominated them for a half, Dominated Brisbane and Ricmond early but didn't hit the scoreboard and fell off. If we structure up better around the ground which Lobb and Jones already help with add some genuine small forwards and outside runners on the wing from the draft then throw in Lade and hopefully another assistant or 2 there is no reason why we can't jump up.

We need 16 wins to finish top 4. We had 10 losses this season, pick 4 of these we win.
  1. Melb - 6
  2. Carlton - 12
  3. Rich - 38
  4. Adelaide - 1
  5. Port - 17
  6. Geel - 13
  7. Bris - 41
  8. Syd - 53
  9. Geel - 28
  10. Freo - 17

Got the same 23 myself. Appears to finally be quite an obvious 'best 23' followed by some reasonable, but quite thin depth. Need a good run with injuries this year.

Depth really does look thin outside of key positions (oh how the turntables).

Looking at it, I wouldn’t be totally surprised if we traded one of our future firsts into this first round to try and get some combination of outside mid, KPD and small forward.

The concerns I have around next year are more our depth players. We've lost 6 players to other clubs in the past couple of years which isn't completely ideal. Taking the posters team above (which I agree with) our depth is as follows:

3x draftees, Bruce, Scott, Hannan, VDM, Roarke, McComb, Khamis, Wallis, Crozier, McNeil, Sweet, O'Brien, Bedendo, Cleary, Jones, Raak

A few of those guys can be role players in a best 22 but there isn't a heap of quality. I hope we hit on a couple of picks that can make an immediate impact or guys like McNeil, Bedendo & Cleary can make a significant jump next year.
