External Hard Drive Security

OK, so I picked up a 320gb external hard drive for 30 bucks yesterday and spent all of last night transferring everything across. Now that I've done that, I want to know if there is a way that I can password it without encrypting it and making encrypted files etc.

Is there any software that does this? Preferably freeware but PM me if there's a good torrent that you guys have used

is it a 3.5" or 2.5" hard drive ?

Probably a Seagate 7200.11 with SD15 firmware and they got sick of bricked drives coming back.
