I have recently tried to apply for a mobile phone on a $59 plan with a telecommunications company and I was declined because I did not pass the credit check.

I am not sure why this happened because I have never borrowed any money in my life- I have had no credit cards, no home loans, no car loans, and in the past I have always used pre-paid mobile phones.

Does anyone here have any ideas on why I failed the credit check?

Could someone have stolen my identity and taken out loans?

Have you ever broken a lease on a rental house? This can give you a bad credit history.

Sometimes you can fail a credit check because you have no credit history.

Other than that I've no idea.

No, I have always paid my rent.

Perhaps the fact that I have no credit history could be the reason.

I have bolded your problem.

<molly meldrum>Do yourself a favour </molly meldrum> and go get a credit card so you can get a credit reference.

Also, are you aware yo can pay about $25 and access your official credit reference?

$51.95 from here:

Not sure if there are cheaper places you can get it from.

Don't apply for credit again within a 6 month period. Too many entries on your credit file will also inhibit your ability to get a loan or any other form of credit contract.

Can be all sorts of stuff. I was surprised to find I had a negative credit entry because I had overdue fines with a video store that I'd never paid, because I moved city and stopped using the store.
