"Cricket Australia chiefs informed BBL bosses last week that the new innovation will be coming in for next season which will allow clubs to pick a Designated Hitter who can bat but be saved from fielding, and then replaced mid-innings by a specialist Designated Fielder who cannot bowl."

Similar to the Mercantile Mutual Cup in the late 90s, just with some fancier branding.

So just as Khawaja is retired from test cricket, they bring in a rule so he can keep playing hit and giggle…

yeah, and it's a perfectly logical rule. it's much better than the silly x-factor/super-sub/impact player rules, precisely because it takes away some of the tactical elements relating to match situations. it just becomes "do you want to keep an old fat guy around for another season?". it'll probably help older bowlers too as they'll be one less old batter to 'hide' in the field which allows for them to be hid in the field. it's a rule that will improve the quality of cricket without changing the game too drastically. it's a no-brainer

the BBL probably should have had this rule from day 1 and most T20 competitions should look at having a similar rule.
