Im attending Falls Fest for the first time this year and will be leaving tomorrow for this years festival.

To be honest i have no idea what to expect and take on the trip.

I have a tent and a few eskys at home but in terms of food and clothes im not sure what to take.

Any advise from previous people who have attended would be nice.

Cheers

Definitely take a chair!

The last 2 years I have been completely opposite weather wise so keep an eye on the forecast. 2 years ago it was so hot and horrible then last year it was really wet and fairly cold. I think I actually preferred the rain. Another good idea is a large flag of some sort so if you get stuck in the backlots of the parking area you can easily find your car.

Don't get too scared to take alcohol into the venue. I stupidly left a beer bottle between my legs last year and still got waved through.

Don't buy too many beer tickets on the first day because they only last one day then they change the colour.

And if the organic pizza van is there. Do yourself a favour and get the one with egg on it. Greatest festival food van EVER!

i've only been to marion bay, but i'd imagine it's much the same...

bugger taking eskies full of food. the longer the days go, the more second hand you'll become, and you won't feel like going back to the car... falls festival (any music festival) is no time to go being a tight arse... if you can't afford at least $200 for food and alcohol, don't bother going.

make sure you have clothing for all conditions... as someone else has alluded to, lorne and marion bay are both known for their changeable weather. anything can happen at a festival... u might get drunk, u might fall over, u might be annoyed by douchebags... but nothing will ruin your festival experience more than unsuitable clothes.

i went a few years ago when it was hot... great, i had hats, sunnies, tshirts, shorts etc.

last year? well, my situation was a little bizarre, in that i now live in canberra and was in tassie for 10 days... i hadn't really packed a lot of warm clothes, so even when i knew the forecast was average, all i took was a pair of trackies, a thin jacket, and normal summer clothes. it rained on night one, so my clothes got wet. then on the second nite it rained again, and we literally got snow warnings and subzero temperatures... on new years eve!

thats the biggest bit of advice i'd give... check the forecast and make damn sure you're packing appropriately.

the other bit of advice i'd give... have a discussion with the people you're going with before you get thbere... what's you're entry and exit strategy? do u want to be close to the gate and away from the action for a quick getaway? or do u want to be in the thick of it with a slow getaway on friday? this will be the initial source of confusion and/or arguments.

last year my mates and i didn't discuss it... we ended up camping about 100 metres from the gate... we're on top of the hill at marion bay, up in the freezing winds, with all the lights on at the entry. was it worth it to be able to get out quickly? i dunno... but i do wished we'd discussed it beforehand.

I swear all I ate last year was salsa on bread. You don't need to buy a heap of food that caters for the five food groups.

Oh, and get a German Bratwurst.

jacket potatos were the meal of the falls champion last year.

i wasn't planning on going this year, only because disappointingly, there was no one in tassie to go with. i always said that "if it was a one night festival, i'd just go by myself cos u see heaps of people u know... but 2 nights is a long time..."

i'm now looking at the line up and thinking i could buy a cheap ticket off ebay, go day one, catch the philly jays, art vs science, sarah blasko, john steele singers, liam finn, jamie t, and the hoods... stay over night, see lisa mitchell and urthboy... then go back to launceston. all i'd miss that i'm interested in (and haven't seen in the last year) would be the yeah yeah yeahs.

would it be a bit lame?

Some things to take:

Chair, torch, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, warm jacket (gets cold at night), shoes (not just thongs), some food (not huge amounts though as generally I find that you dont eat much down there) and maybe some bog roll.

See you all down there.

Was probably my best falls yet (this was my third in a row).

Highlights were Datarock, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Philadelphia Grand Jury for me. Also thought The View, The Temper Trap and Midnight Juggernauts were pretty good.

Moby was a surprise for me, I'm not really a fan but I thought he was awesome.
