Summer is here it's pretty hot at the moment. I live in a bungalow at home and it heats up like you wouldn't believe. 9am it would be 22 outside and feel like 28 in my bungalow. I use a fan but it's old and crap and going to buy one on the weekend. What is a good brand and shop to go to?

I cannot afford an air con cost too much and I only work part time. How about ceiling fans?

Thanks.

A fan is a pretty simple mechanical device - a cheap one will probably be fine. No need to buy an expensive Dyson-type. You can probably pick up a free-stander for $15.

Ceiling fans are best for sleeping and, surprisingly, for warming up your house. People need to understand how a fan works. It doesn't heat or cool the air. It can mix it around (so if you get 'hot spots' from your heating system it can move it around) or it can blow in air from outside (either hot or cold). A ceiling fan is much more expensive and difficult to install (and you will probably need a sparky). I would probably recommend for your situation an exhaust fan (as in a bathroom) - suck the hot air out into the roof cavity, cooler air flows in from the window. Again, installation not easy or cheap.

If the temperature is uniform, any fan can make you feel cooler by increasing your perspiration evaporation - provided you have bare skin exposed.

I guess I'm in a similar situation to you.

My bedroom is a converted single car garage. No insulation, so its a tin roof and yeah it gets ****ing hot in summer. (Suprisingly tho it is very easy to heat up during winter,).

Luckily for me, there was already a ceiling fan when I moved in- which is very nice to have, its directly over the bed, so all good.

I bought a portable air con for around $600, which has now lasted for about 4 summers. If the temp is anything around 30 degrees or less, it cools the room down quite well.

Anything over 33/34- upwards, I may as well not even turn it on, does **** all.

Good luck!

How is the tin roof working for you? Keeping you nice and toasty?
