When all is said and done, criticism of my post (I doff my tophat to DaveW) triggered the cutest photo of Craig ever photochopped:

Indeed, 2004 was a very good year for creativity - ie, Shrek 2, Milkshake by Kelis, appointing interim coaches to full time positions despite them presiding over club record 141-point losses just weeks before, etc.

Unfortunately, three years of hindsight is usually a creamy tub of Rofflait - it's French for LOL.

Haha, i was wondering what the missing picture was.

Seriously though, i found that last thread hillarious, mainly because it shows just how ridiculous we can all look given hindsight. Im sure ive been guilty of it before, and if caught out on it the only real option is to just laugh :D . Good job taking my post in good humor though.

Im guessing you didnt go back to Alberton after all, or was the grass just not greener when you got there? :p

Is that you in the cowardly lion outfit DT?

Here I'll save you the trouble: "Glenelg.......blah, blah,blah.................Peter Carey.........blah,blah,blah.......Scotty Salisbury"

Such bitterness. :)

Thank god the AFC board followed the process they wanted and got the right man for the job, lucky we didn’t get Terry Wallace as senior coach or this may have been a reality. :thumbsu:

Plough inherited a wasteland though, I still reckon he's doing alright under the circumstances.

Only made one major blunder for mine, and that was taking Tambling over Franklin - he'd already got the quality small (Deledio), why not take the other prime tall?

The perception surrounding the AFC list at the time was not much better.

Would you be so magnanimous in your praise of his efforts if he had the AFC in the same precarious position as Richmond?

If Terry Wallace was appointed senior coach of the AFC and we missed the finals in 2005 and 2006 and started 2007 0 and 4 he would almost be gone.

All true, but our core of superstars was some sort of start. Richmond's stars upon taking over were Richo and... uh... Joel Bowden?

I said he's doing alright under the circumstances.

He took over wooden spooners with 4 wins and has engineered 10 and 11 wins in his first 2 seasons.

The start of this season is of concern, but their list is still a fair way away - as Plough previously acknowledged - with all their gun youngsters still only into their third season.

If Terry Wallace was appointed senior coach of the AFC and we missed the finals in 2005 and 2006 and started 2007 0 and 4 he would almost be gone.

Disagree.

When Craig took over we looked a long way off and set for a heavy rebuilding phase.

Had NC got us 10 wins in 2005 and 11 in 2006 we'd still have been very happy - but as I said, having club legends of the calibre of Ricciuto, Goodwin, McLeod, Edwards, Hart to build around is a luxury that Wallace hasn't had.

Eade - the other candidate - has been able to do a similar rebuild to Craig with the likes of West, Grant, Darcy, Smith and Johnson forming an excellent core of talent and experience.

I reckon in Wallace's case, he's the victim of his early success and self-inflicted high profile - similar to when Carlton slipped backwards to be wooden spooners after their 10 wins and Wizard Cup success early under Pagan, and the Blues faithful were calling for his head.

I wouldn't want that pompous, solarium tanning windbag anywhere near our club.

He only talked to us in the first place to increase his offer from Richmond ... thank god he never would have coached the crows anyway.

After reading “7 and 9 say Craig has been appointed” again DT, that is absolute tripe. I know, you know, even grounds keeper Willey in Springfield elementary knows it.

Had Neil Craig only been able to win 10 game in 2005 and 11 in 2006 and then started the 2007 with a less than impressive win - loss ratio the knifes would have been out (especially from this board) and called for him to be removed.

He was far from the favourable candidate and the unbridged shown towards his appointment was evident that he needed some success early in his tenure at Adelaide.

Maybe Eade and Wallace would have been given a bit more latitude if they were appointed but IMO the same would not have gone NC way.

Eade was also able to build up a team from very early Rd 1 draft picks, something Neil Craig has not had the luxury to do.

Scott

I was initially against Eade cause of his Sydney ranting and the way they got rid of him.

Now he has learnt from those dark days and is going along quite nicely thank you.

Would have done a great job with us in hindsight.

Thats a question that will never get answered and this is a pattern throughout his hostory us a coach. He loves quick runners and ball carriers and even at the Doggies he overlooked prime talls for midfielder types through out his 7 years there.

That trend carried over to Richmond. He doesn't like drafting talls especially with early picks. Its one thing that turned me off him as a coaching candidate at the time. He is just midfielder happy.

If that's the case, he will never make a GF, let alone win one.

That thread was the reaction to the 'process' and the fact that Craig was in charge when we were spanked by Brisbane by a club record 141 points just weeks earlier - not to mention the awful Kangaroos win the week after when we didn't kick a goal for the entire first half.

All of us were sure we were entering a heavy rebuilding phase - had NC been able to get us 10 and 11 wins and show clear improvement we'd have been rapt.

Unless you had a time machine and could show what he could've achieved - Minor Premiers in 2005 and back to back Prelims - I'm not sure how we could've been disappointed, given we only managed 8 wins in 2004 the majority of which were either scrappy or over dud teams.

He was far from the favourable candidate and the unbridged shown towards his appointment was evident that he needed some success early in his tenure at Adelaide.

Again, if he had us going in the right direction playing a good brand of football he would've been given time, no question.

On the other hand, any more performances like the one at the Gabba, or a 1995 Robert Shaw Fitzroy-esque loss and he would've been under the pump and rightly so.

I have to say that i thought the quote i pulled out from you was such a beauty, mainly because you're usually an intelligent poster who tries to be rational in his postings. Im not sure why people were expecting instant results from Craigy back in 2004? It takes more than a week to turn around a club on the brink.

To be honest, it was mainly tongue in cheek - I also had a Tredrea avatar at the time IIRC - but Jars458's stinging reaction caused me to play it straight as we'd had some good stoushes in the past.

The subsequent post-script on the Port Board still makes for quality reading.

It wasn't just that, it was a mixture of things.

- The fact the club wanted a fresh approach, but chose to promote an assistant who had been there since the Blight-era - and as Ayres' second leiutenant would have had a certain amount of input into the calamity that had befallen us anyway.

- The fact that Wallace and Eade were widely considered to be more qualified, yet the club still chose to promote from within (nepotism?).

- The fact the process at the time was inconsistent - Wayne Jackson who has been specifically brought in for the interview process was ill for Eade's presentation (no postponement?) but was subsequently present for Craig's, etc.

- Then on the field we copped a club record loss under Craig's command followed up by a goalless half against the Kangas - which combined with the Gabba final quarter meant for three consecutive quarters we hadn't scored a goal. Unheard of in modern footy.

...It takes more than a week to turn around a club on the brink.

Funnily enough, it was thought at the time that our 70-odd point win over the Dees in Craig's first game in charge lit the fuse which eventually saw him appointed.
