Do you all mostly agree that the 'Oz' style of music with it's disticncive sound is dead ?

I mean things like Goanna, INXS, 'This is Australia' Chisels, Oils etc ( I know hte Oils are still going but who's picking it up today ? I like Killing Heidi but I wouldn't call them distinctly Australian.

How did it start and why did it end ? (I only arrived here in late 88 although I did visit a few times from '84 onwards

I look at it this way Pess :

The Rest of the World has 'caught up' with the Australian sound and copied it ad nauseum, but because the sound is still a little raw and lacks the slick production values of British or American Pop, it is still referred to by the Rest of the World as 'alternative'

Meanwhile Pop music in Australia has moved onto fresher territory, like all the different styles of Dance Music and electro-pop going around these days.

If you still want to hear good Oz Rock 80's style then

FLY ANSETT !!!!

- its an instant time warp back to 1983 as soon as you step on the plane and put the headphones on ....

I wouldn't have called INXS a distinctly Australian sounding band either...didn't their best album, The Swing, have a distinct Japanese influence on the sound?

The other month I was at the Corner Hotel in the public bar (think dark, dusty, plenty of jugs of beer everywhere) with some friends, and we were watching Marty Donald do a solo set followed by a couple of people from the Mabels. My friend commented that the Mables were part of this new era of Australian-country-pop bands. Bands like the Mabels, Golden Rough, and the Lucksmiths put plenty of Australian references in their lyrics (always interesting to explain the meaning of "and dear old St. Kilda, and I'm red and black and white" from a Lucksmiths song to friends overseas!....to Saints fans, the CD is called "What Bird Is That?" and it's track 3) and I guess that is what gives a song an Australian feel. Think of some of Paul Kelly's lyrics and he couldn't be singing about anywhere else in the world apart from our home.

Good call BSA it is a crack up.

"and now I'm in a night club in Hamburg, and they're playing La Vida Loca once again, and I can't believe I'm dancing to this crap but I'm a chance here..."

had some great hits but went down hill abit about the time of the zoo tv tour but there new single is good and more like their older stuff

Shinners GreenDay and Buzzcocks? Thats a reach but Powderfinger and Chisel???

Im a Reznor fan but he is the first to admit he rips from everywhere. I still like his stuff though, but Ian Curtis was the GOD of introspective music. The last genius RIP.

BSA the classics are cool, hell i like swing from the 40's big band stuff, Goodman and all that. Jolson,Ragtime Scott Joplin. I say give it a go at least once to see if you like it, then once more just to see if you were wrong the first time around for not liking it.

ps that applies to more than just music

I don't think anyone's mentioned Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds yet.

But I regard Nick Cave as one of the most charismatic performers I've ever seen.

In the early 1980s he was in a band called The Birthday Party. Now, this band was seriously "alternative". By that I mean it was alternative to anything I've ever seen before or since. A Birthday Party gig was a genuinely dangerous place to be.

I also saw them in their early days when they were called the Boys Next Door. I have an idelible memory of Nick Cave clutching a set of rosary beads singing "I've been contemplating suicide", the opening line line of guitarist, Rowland Howard's classic, "Shivers". Burnside Town Hall, Adelaide, 1978. And the song is as moving today as it was then. More so, in fact.

You just had to be there, I guess.

**release the bats**

for oldies,
the doors-riders of the storm
the who-my generation

and today,
The offspring- all there songs rock
cypress hill-insane in the brain
limp bizkit-break stuff
blink 182-apple shampoo
red hot chilly peppers-scar tissue & californiacation.

And to Alf, i like Nick Cave's song "red right hand."

Well my fav bands would be...
1. AC/DC (can't wait for the concert!!)
2. Matchbox 20 (also can't wait for the concert)
3. Def Lepard
4. Hunters and Collectors
5. Whitesnake
6. Live
7. Pearl Jam
8. Jimmy Barnes
9. Aerosmith
10. Guns 'n' Roses

Shit I better stop now or I will go on forever about my fav bands

Grendel

The point my friend was making was that in the same way that Cold Chisel were seen as a sort of icon band in the 80s (y'know, they'd release and album, the critics would wet themselves and every household would have a copy), Powderfinger are the current equivalent.

Alf

I'm jealous now that you got to see the Birthday Party. I was too young and didn't get into them until the mid 80s, but I haven't listened to any of their music for years now. "Shivers" is a classic though...everyone should hear it....and go for the original, not the awful cover done by those AC/DC wannabes, the Screaming Jets. Incidentally, a friend of mine interviewed Rowland S Howard earlier this year for her fanzine.

You wanted the best, you got the best, the hottest band in the world - KISS. Sound familiar? The may be old & fat but they can still rock and should be out here late this year hopefully. Just bought their Second Coming DVD which is very interesting.

Also like Fastball from Austin, TX they have a great sound.
