Favourite beer

Makes me think about that six pack or slab or whatever that you bring home from the grog shop, put it all in the fridge, and then get one out. That first one is always just not quite cold enough ... but what are you going to do? Leave it in the freezer and go without beer for 15 minutes? You can see the bind I'm in.

Except when you venture east of the city to the Parade.....nothing like Friday night Footy on the Coopers Hill!

Any beer with the Coopers label would do me until the day I die...even Coopers Light (for DD's everywhere!) tastes better than any other light.

Here in Victoria, if I am at the pub, I plump for Tooheys New on tap.

Australian: VB, Carlton Cold, Boags Premium or Crownies bottled, Carlton Draught on Tap.

Worst - Anything Tooheys, West End.

International: Becks, Carlsberg, Newcastle Brown, Stella, Guinness.

Worst - Anything American, and Heineken.

Local - James Squire Pilsener, Mt.Macedon Ale (two best Australian beers by a mile)

German - Lowenbrau, Beck's, almost all others but prefer those two

Stout - Guinness (on tap), Tennent's

Other imported - Asahi, Tennent's (not the "Super"), Molson Ice (Canada).

Cheap - Bavaria, Amsterdam Mariner... not as good as proper German pilseners, but still 1000% than Aussie beers at roughly the same price.

Decent but overrated - Heineken, Leffe (different varieties), actually most Belgian and Dutch stuff...

Worst - most mainstream Australian beers but NOTHING is as bad as the filth made by Carlsberg, especially Carlsberg Elephant & Skol. Tennent's Super is a shocker too. Generally, most higher-alcohol beers just taste BAD... Grand Ridge brwery in Gippsland could show the big breweries a thing or two about brewing a decent "super" beer.

This thread seems to come up every 3 months on every topic board I'm aware of - and I don't mind it one bit.

THE GOOD STUFF: German Pilsners. Warsteiner & Becks in my fridge without fail. Also try to keep stocked up on Czech Pilsner Urquel. Those 3, and Glenlivet Scotch is what's to be had at my place.

SUCKS: Any sweet beer. Sam Adams is a scam. I don't like any mainstream American domestic either, although being from Missouri lends me a preferenece for Anheuser products if I absolutely have no choice but to drink domestic.

ALSO SUCKS: Mexican beer. Corona is sewer water - literally. Don't give me, "It tastes good with a lime." If you like lime in your beer, then put lime in a good beer.

Peace & I wish I was home at the moment drinking a beer.

I try putting them in the freezer before cracking the first one, but I usually give in and suffer through it. The rest end up tasting that much sweeter.

Once I took Tasman Bitter to a party. It's made by Boag's, and is quite good, but not as good as Boag's itself. However, I ran out and had to drink a Carlton Draught. In comparison the CD was absolutely disgusting. How do people drink that ****? VB and Carlton Cold are no betteer.

Me too. You know that you've got more to wash it down, so its ok in the long run.

Some good calls by Aussie Basher:

I'll just go top 10 brewerys:

1. Hook Norton - Old Hookey please

2. Gales - Their HSB is sooooo good
3. Fullers - Any of the range
4. Woodforde - Served me very well last weekend

5. Coniston - 'Bluebird' is exquisite
6: Timothy Taylor - When the 'Landlord' is right, oh mama!
7: Batemans - Especially the XXXB with its banana flavour
8: Holdens - A rare but excellent 'Dark Mild'
9: Hampshire - Not a well known brewery but excellent quality
10: Exmoor - The 'Beast' is well named (oh my head)

Can't go far wrong with the Belgians (I don't care for the 'Blond' beers though), especially the Trappist. The German Erdingers are worth checking out and the Dutch produce some potent stuff. Picked up a bottle of one called "Abbeye des Roques" recently, must find that one again

D'accord.

After years of avoiding the stuff (due to thinking it pretentious to stick a piece of citrus fruit in a beer), I finally gave in and had a Corona at a mexican restaurant last year.

Now I understand why Corona drinkers stick a lemon in it: to give it a flavour. Without lemon, the stuff has no taste. You might as well be drinking mineral water.

But frig - if you have to stick a lemon in your beer to give it flavour, why not save yourself the trouble and just buy a frickin' lemonade in the first place?

Only other beer I'd consider giving a score of ZERO to would be Fosters' special light. I thought that stuff tasted like lemons even though it didn't come served with a slice stuffed down the neck.

A man after my own heart, Darky... I drink a fair bit of James Squire, largely because the only comparable beer (Matilda Bay Pils) is hard to come by in Adelaide.

I've never heard of the Mt Macedon Ale, but given that you rate James Squire highly, I don't doubt that it's good stuff. Any idea where I could find some in SA?

Uncle Steve's list of shameful Aussie dishwater:

1. Fosters' special light

2. Any Victorian tap beer, with the notable exception of Carlton Draught.

3. Coopers Draught. Coopers brewery is a national treasure; their staff are truly master craftsmen who make superb ales, stouts and other brews. How it is that such a great brewery can thoroughly bugger up a simple tap beer is beyond me. I rate their draught as low as VB, if not lower. Quite a shame, given that the rest of their produce is superb. (Except the Premium Ale, which is kinda average)

Any of those pooncey imported "Wheat Beers". Can't stand them. Especially that super-popular German one which tastes like cloves. Can't think of the name right now - which is good, 'coz I'd rather drink my own vomit than a pint of that stuff.

Mexian beer - see Corona.

Spanish beer - see San Miguel. I went drinking in the clubs in Barcelona; it is telling that the only beer sold by one of them was Fosters. The local swill is not worth drinking.

Yes but we all know that Fosters, especially the exported variety is just mildly alcoholic dishwater.

That would probably be Schofferhofer. Tastes like a wheat field has been set on fire and the smoke funnelled into a bottle. Absolutely filthy.

I have always been rather annoyed at the SANFL, they let Norwood get away with selling Coopers but the rest of the clubs can't, it makes me so

!

One day I am going to have do something about that!

I tried a Crown Lager last night, for the first time in about 5 years, just to find out what all the fuss was about. Very average. Very overrated.

I think the older you get the less sensitive your taste buds get.
Still love VB over Melb bitter just for the fact that I think melb gets flatter quicker. Usually buy Carlton Draught now cause of the crowd I'm drinking with.

If Carlton Black is on Tap then I cant resist. Same goes with Guiness.

But I'm with the rest of the Population and my favourite beer if the one that is produced the most. VB. Not out of the Tap though.
