Don't have to have any sort of significant meaning, just lyrics that catch your attention for whatever reason.

Some of mine :

"Please don't slow me down if I'm going too fast" - Reptilia by The Strokes

"What the hell am I trying to say?" - On a Pain by Nirvana

"I can't tell you how proud I am, I write about things I don't understand" - Black Math by the White Stripes

"You might be dumb but you're the most beautiful creature I've ever seen in my life" - You Dumb by My Red Cell

"I waited hours for this, I made myself so sick, I wish I stayed in bed today" - Close to Me by The Cure

"Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" - Bullet With Butterfly Wings by the Smashing Pumpkins

"Wash me away
Clean your body of me
Erase all the memories
They will only bring us pain
And I've seen all I'll ever need" Citizen Erased by Muse

and

"You convince yourself that you want it, but you don't know
You keep trying to wash the blood from your hands, but it won't go" The handshake by MGMT

"Yeah it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?" Time to pretend by MGMT

Trying to steer clear from some of the more obvious ones:

"The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn trees
It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks"

Johnny Cash, The Man Comes Around. I've got no idea what it means, but I just love the imagery!

"There is a crack, there is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in"

Leonard Cohen, Anthem. Sums him up just about perfectly, I reckon.

Pretty much the whole of Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere, by Nick Cave. Some of the most heartwrenching lyrics I've ever heard, but simple and unpretentious. The last two verses in particular get me every time. If you haven't heard it, look it up.

I'm the Slime by Frank Zappa is lyrically brilliant.

"Then an ad for Pepsi cola
Made them look, and sent them reeling
Clean white nymphs on beaches
Left them with a sinking feeling
Just knowing they might never get
A chance to deal in
Hard currency"

Hard Currency, Mick Thomas.

"If living within, means living without
You got to lay your fears right down
Come out of the cage, and up from the ground
You know that rabbit dug the hound
And everything it remembered had finally been unlearned
You know how a memory lingers until the tables they are turned."

The Rabbit Hugged The Hound, Kelley Stoltz.

"And with this betrayal an angel
Descended from on high
Oh but this was not a manger
And as he came inside
To his fright,
'twas no angel hanging naked."

Snow Angel, by Ron Sexsmith. The whole song is an absolute cracker though. Truly brilliant songwriter.

"Your husband's hollow heart gave out one Christmas day
He left the villa to his mistress in Marseilles
So now you come here to escape your little flat
Hoping someone will fill your glass and let you chat about how
You chased the sun around the Cote D'Azur
Until the light of youth became obscure
And left you on your own and in the shade
An English lady of a certain age"

Lady of a Certain Age, by the Divine Comedy.

"It seemed like forever til the sobbing stopped
And they talked for a little but just too soft to hear
Daddy kept looking at the side of her face
One hand on the wheel, one hand stroking her hair
The headlights shining from the other way
Showed tears on cheeks of daddy's face
I prayed for Jesus to send his grace
And all our souls to keep
Back then I believed
They thought I was asleep
The night was dark and deep
I wish I was asleep."

Paul Kelly, They Thought I Was Asleep.

"Sunlight, hello, you look wonderful
Darling Charlie, pale and deathly still
For heaven's sake wake up Charlie...

...Raised my hand in anger hurt you again
Dust to dust and fire to ashes you can
Thank me for nothing now Charlie...

...How my heart bleeds, love's a big mistake
Mercy, Charlie, oh for pity's sake
Speak to me, forgive me Charlie"

Those are the chorus lyrics from Charlie, by Split Enz (Tim Finn wrote it). Chilling song.

"Like camping outdoors, coming home when it rains
Travelled up to the city never got off that train
We were young and excited and all the time we believed
That we'd be out in the city living out all those dreams
Lord I know now what I didn't know then
In lips of the river, and the hands of Big Ben
Ah I'm never gonna love me like the old song said
So I guess I'll keep on looking somewhere else instead."

Danny George Wilson, Somewhere Else Instead.

"Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the law man beating up the wrong guy
Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best-selling show?
Is there life on Mars?"

David Bowie, Life on Mars.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Oh Comely
I know they buried her body with others
her sister and mother and five hundred families
and will she remember me 50 years later
I wish I could save her in some kind of time machine

Neutral Milk Hotel have some good ones.

"And Dad would dream of all the different ways he could die
Each one just a little more than he could dare to try"

Some from Jesus Christ by Brand New -

"I know you'll come in the night like a thief
But I've had some time oh lord, to hone my lying technique
I know you think I'm someone you can trust
But I'm scared I'll get scared and I swear I'll try to nail you back up
So do you think that we could work out a sign
So I'll know it's you and that it's over so I won't even try
I know you're coming for the people like me
But we all got wood and nails
And we turn out hate in factories"

Not 100% sure about that last line but it's something about hate factories.

The lyrics to Cornerstone by the Arctic Monkeys are.... interesting.

"I thought I saw you in the rusty hook
Huddled up on a wicker chair
I wandered over for a closer look
And kissed whoever was sitting there
She was close, and she held me very tightly
Till I asked awfully politely, please can I call you her name"

finishing off with

"I saw your sister in the cornerstone
On the phone to the middle man
And when I saw that she was on her own
I thought she might understand
She was close, well you couldn't get much closer
She said I'm really not supposed to but yes
You can call me anything you like"

"I think we need more post-coital and less post-rock
Feels like the build-up takes forever but you never get me off" Straight in at 101 - Los Campesinos!

"That there
That's not me
I go
Where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey
I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here
I'm not here"

Radiohead - How to Dissapear Completely

'I want something good to die for, to make it beautiful to live' - Go with the Flow by Queens of the Stone Age

Much of the Bad Religion back catalogue

The Kids, Cemetary by Strung Out

Heavy Heart - You Am I

Regret for things I've said and done, just can't compare with regret for those I have never tried - Blackball by The Offspring

Tom Waits - Dirt in the ground

Hell's boiling over
Heaven is full
We're chained to the world
And we all gotta pull
And we're all gonna be
Just dirt in the ground

And I was like
Baby, baby, baby ohhh
Like baby, baby, baby noo
Like baby, baby, baby ohh
I thought youd always be mine mine

Pretty women walking with gorillas down my street - Joe Jackson.

Here kitty kitty. You better move along.
Cuz the big cats walk at the break of dawn.
Now doggonnit baby. Oohh I said doggone...
Hey can your pussy do the dog? Can your pussy do the dog?
Can your pussy do the (houndog, bulldog, poodlecut) baby?
Can your pussy do the dog?
This whole mess useless now as a whistle on a plow. If your pussy can't do the dog.

I'm the king of the jungle. They call me tiger man. I'm gonna do the bird. If I can, if I can. My bird can do the dog. If your pussy can?
Come on and wag that tail. Baby you can't fail. If'n your pussy can't do the dog. Hey hey hey...Hully hully gully...Now fetch this..

No pedigree from France will get you in the dance. Lessin your pussy can do the dog. Come on and wag that tail baby you can't fail.
If'n your pussy can do the dog. Cha cha cha! - The Cramps

I got hairs growing 'round my nose and throat
I don't ever exercise the right to vote
when you see me on the street you yell 'Jesus Christ!'
but I"m gettin' mine...
I'm doin' all right

I'm not ever gonna go to Vietnam
I prefer to stay right here and screw your mom
when you see me on the street you yell 'Jesus Christ!'
but I"m gettin' mine...
I'm doin' all right

when I walk down the street
the people that I meet
hold their noses and say
'how are you fixed for money?'
but I just walk on by
I don't even hear them
because I'm high
and I'm getting almost as much pussy as the spades
I'm doin' all right

we've got to love one another and we've got to die
so rip your panties off and look me right in the eye
you can't miss me, I look a lot like Jesus Christ
I'm gettin' mine...
I'm doin' all right

I got hairs growing 'round my nose and throat
I don't ever exercise the right to vote
when you see me on the street you yell 'Jesus Christ!'
but I"m gettin' mine...
I'm doin' all right

but I'm gettin' mine...
what are you doin' tonight?

but I"m gettin' mine...
I'm doin' all right

So I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said "eh I know you and you cannot sing"
I said "That's nothing you should hear me play piano"

When your tied to your mothers apron
No one talks about castration

From The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths

the ataris - the saddest song

Only two more days, until your birthday
Yesterday was mine
You'll be turning five
I know what it's like, growing up without your father in your life
So I pretend, I'm doing all I can
And I hope someday you'll find it in your heart

To understand
Why I'm not around
And forgive me for not being in your life

I remember waiting
For you to come
Remember waiting
For you to call
Remember waiting there to find nothing at all
I remember waiting
For you to come
Remember waiting
For you to call
Waiting there to find nothing at all

maybe someday
you really get to know me
not just the letters read to you
I pray I get the chance
To make it up to you
We got a lot of catching up to do

So I pretend, I'm doing all I can
And hope someday you'll find it in your heart

To understand
Why I'm not around
And forgive me for not being in your life

I remember waiting
For you to come
Remember waiting
For you to call
Remember waiting there to find nothing at all
I remember waiting
For you to come
Remember waiting
For you to call
Waiting there to find nothing at all

Forgive me!
I'm so sorry!
I will make it up to you....

David Bowie quote]

Quality lyricisists there !!!!!!

I have been listening to a lot of old country lately. Tom T Hall in particular who is my Dad's favourite singer. In Old, Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine, he sings a great line

"God Bless little children, while they're still too young to hate"

He is a great lyricist. Known in country circles as The Storyteller. He tells of life as it really is in rural America, often critical of the small town mentality. Listening to his music is like reading an Annie Proulx short story.

How many times have you heard someone say
"If I had money, I'd do things my way."?

But little do they know
how hard it is to find
one rich man in ten
with a satisfied mind....
