Not only a golden moment for music but also my favourite period of tennis.

Anyone old enough, have a favourite player that they remember from this era?

What about Borg, Conners, Vitas, Vilas and theres a few others. Conners played till the 90's and he was still very good in the 80's. And Borg some people say is the best ever. He played till 85 i think (roundabouts).
This vote is gipped, but go johnny mac

I can think of why you like Hlasek (great European good looks) but Hlasek? Brought the great Mats down with his coke! Hlasek ended up being a great coach.

To be honest I thought of Connors (sic) but he was more 70's and he hung around like a pest in the 80's. He even went back to his T2000 and really was like a fly on a ********.

Bjorn was quintisentially a 70's player too although he managed a couple of slams in 80-81 along with Vitas but it would be like featuring a 90's thread with Wilander and Lendl when they were on the decline? You will find Borg definitely retired, albeit way too young, in 1981 citing falling out of love with the game but basically he was mind f++ked and basically spent the next few years staring at walls.

Your points are good, and that's what I like about BF, it reminds me of things I'd forgotten about and perhaps there should have been allowances for all of these guys as a calendar decade is not quite an era is it?

What a period of tennis! Lendl was my favourite. Connors in that US open in the late 80s was fantastic. He was nearly 37 years old and took Agassi to 5 sets in the QF's. The names bring back memories. Miloslav Mecir,Jimmy Arias, Carl-Uwe Steeb!

Catherine Tanvier

French Player who made it as high as #5 in 1983. Had the longest, most beautiful legs you've ever seen. Made her own outfits as well, so her skirts were smaller than a Micro. Played in the Hopman Cup in 1989/90. Camera Angles were great in those days. ;)

Superbrat.

Still laugh uncontrollably every time I see that footage, of him with his huge curly mullet perm and headband going off at a chair ump.

"answer my QUESTION! The QUESTION, JERK"

You had me at hello!

I used to umpire as a linesman at the Aussie Open and in my first year she was playing Larissa Savchenko on about Court 14 out the back. My position was right behind the receiver (Tanvier) and you had to bend down when they bent over to return serve. Fair dinkum I nearly missed the shot as I looked up those perfect legs to find a G-String! This was 1990 folks and we hadn't seen many of those in those days except on strippers. The other linesman thought this was heaven too and then fat Savchenko came up to our end the next game and she had these massive bog catchers on and we nearly spewed our guts up!

Great day for tennis and she rates as the most awesome honey on the court IMHO.

Aaah, Mecir, The Big Cat. He used to love dining on Swedes when everyone else was getting flogged by them.

Jimmy Arias was a dead ringer for Matthew Broderick from War Games I remember?

You Lucky Bastard... and unlucky bastard. :D

I didn't know she wore G-Strings. I'll have to ask her next time we travel to the South of France. She is my wife's second cousin, so we see her whenever we go to the Languedoc region (Toulouse). My wife is 5'9" and has the long long legs as well. She has one of Catherine's short skirts and looks absolutely gorgeous when she's playing tennis. Maybe she can play Tennis in a G-String as well.

And you call me a lucky bastard!!!!

Catherine Tanvier to this day is still my favourite female tennis player! With or without a Grand Slam. Unlike that overated underachieving Russian thing!

How about that story? It was the first day that I ever line umpired at the Aussie Open and I will never forget it. I umpired there for 5 years and that is the best moment apart from a Yannick Noah match.

Doh! There's a name I forgot in the votes I think?

The 1990 Aussie Open was the year I think Catherine made the Quarters, but had to pull out with a hamstring injury or something. Also the year, my all-time favourite, Anke Huber, made her Aussie Open debut. I was their for the first week of the Open and saw Anke's 3 matches, and 3 of Catherine's. Easily the best tournament in the world.

I remember seeing Anke for the first time in the players' lounge area and she was getting interviewed, probably for German press? She was speaking rapid German and somebody pointed out to me that she couldn't speak any English. I guess that added to the attraction and the mystique of the girl?

Was cute, in a Germanic sort of way, but Steffi's legs always did it for me.

We used to go out to the back of Stadium Court 2 and watch Stef train in her jogging shorts and wow, what a site that was to behold! ;)

Anke's English was pretty good, not as good as Steffi's, but still pretty good. Most of the Internet Polls on the various Tennis websites, I remember, in the mid to late 90's had her as the 2nd most beautiful tennis player behind Sabatini. Always like her antics and faces on court, and always thought Anke's legs were better than Steffi's. :)

No way. Nobody had better legs than Stef!

But you raised another one, Sabatini! Maybe you should do a thread on the hottest tennis players from the 80's? :)

Sabatini had the see-through sweat thing going 90 seconds into the warm-up. A very tidy piece, but Anke took it over her back then in my opinion. Had a chat to Barbara Schett at the players party when she had only been on tour just over a year. With her hair down and out of her tennis clothes, I was absolutely entranced by her. My favourite by far, although more 90's.

Barbara Paulus was very attractive.

My weekly mood as a 13 year old was determined by Cashy's performances.

Sorry to throw cold water on this but I votyed for Henri Leconte as he was tres funny. Pat Cash was great too the way he never gave up - esp his David Cup matches.

Who was that Belgian lady tenniser? She was cute.

Sabine, yeah, she was beautiful.

Amazing how different some of them looked on court vs the publicity shots the WTA would put out though. Although there was nothing you could do with some of them!
