Me and my mates were thinking about watching Saturday's Rugby World Cup Final at Fed Square, but before we decide I wanted to ask y'all who have watched a sporting event there, eg Australia v England soccer match in February, a few questions.

  • What's the atmosphere like?
  • What time would we need to get there to get a decent viewing position (match starts at 8pm, with entertainment starting at 6pm)?
  • Do you get to sit down, and can you bring deckchairs etc, or is it in effect 'standing room only'?

Thanks for your help.

Had a look on my way home from the Vic v QLD game last Sunday.

If you got there early enough, you'd be able to sit there comfortably.

Wouldn't want to leave the run too late. Being the final, people will probably start to gather there late afternoon, but, the forecast showers might present an inconvenience or 2.

Just on that, I'm probably going to be in a pub locally, simply because it's going to be near impossible to move in the city on Saturday.

I went to Federation Square to watch the rugby last week and we got there about an hour early and had reasonable viewing. The place went off when Mortlock scored the try.

Also saw England vs Socceroos friendly earlier in the year and we all had a really good time, great atmosphere, it was as though we were in the away section at the ground.

It was pretty packed that day and me and my friends managed to get good viewing when we showed up just before the kickoff, however for the rugby I'd suggest you get there pretty early as it will be packed there on Saturday night.

If you want a decent view on Saturday, I'd say get there by 7 at the latest.

I'd suggest getting there around 6 - this will be huge. Of course if the weather's no good it will be a different story.

I was there for the England v Australia match and the atmosphere was simply brilliant, lots of singing and chanting. Place went bananas when Harry and Emerton scored.

Definitely recommend it, just get there early.
