Men choose to have children too. I imagine that super gap will be narrowing in upcoming generations. I don't know any woman who is taking 20 years off work these days. Most will only take 1 or 2.

I was going to post this in the feminist myths thread as it's related to some of the discussion in there, but i thought it's probably worth a separate thread. Forgive me if this is a little scattered as it's really just a series of related things I was thinking about last night that I'm trying to put together into a point.

What got me started was a conversation I was having with someone about violence in rap. I was trying to explain that in the environment a lot of young black men in the US grow up in, you can't afford to be seen as soft. You will be eaten alive. This results in a lot of ultra-macho posturing and shows of strength or ruthlessness that let people know that you're not to be ****ed with. While most men don't have to grow up (or try to grow up) in that kind of environment, the same thing applies to a lesser degree to most males born into low income neighbourhoods. Men often can't afford to show weakness, not just because they believe it would make them look bad, but because it can have very real consequences. That might just mean getting pushed around at school and your lunch money stolen, but it could potentially open you up to a lifetime of ass-kickings and being dominated by the men around you.

Women who grow up in those same neighbourhoods are often looking for a man who can protect them. When you live in a place with high rates of crime and violence, it's advantageous to have a partner that can protect you, either through physical strength or with their reputation. So it's being reinforced by people of both genders that being able to kick someone's ass is a good thing. And how do you prove that you can do it without doing it?

As you move up to the middle and upper classes, the need for physical protection is greatly reduced and women are more likely to value non-violent traits in a man, as violent tendencies are more likely to increase the danger the woman faces rather than protect her from anything. More educated and financially secure males compete with each other in terms of those things (career advancement and monetary gains) rather than placing as much value on who can beat who up.

I guess what I'm getting at is that our problems with violence in society are a lot more to do with economic factors than they are gender. When men grow up in an environment where everybody has a reasonable shot at being successful, the likelihood of them committing violent crimes drops significantly and aggression stops being seen by women as a desirable quality.

It's not a problem with either gender, just as it's not a racial problem. It's all about CLASS and the fair distribution of wealth and opportunity.

Related anecdote that I couldn't fit into the above:
I'm from a low income background and have always spent a fair portion of my social interactions in the company of other poor people (even when living abroad). Ten years ago, I was living in a small flat in one of Melbourne's rougher neighbourhoods with my two primary school age daughters. I lived near the school and would sometimes walk my kids' friends home. One day I was dropping off an 8 year old girl to her single mum, as I often did, but after the initial interaction when the front door opened, the security door opened and I realised it was her rough-looking boyfriend that I'd been speaking to. I suddenly became very uncomfortable, because I'd been inhabiting my harmless single dad persona, thinking I was talking to the mother of the child in my care. If I'd known who was on the other side of the security door, I'd have been much less open and friendly as this may be a guy I will encounter often in future and I don't want him to think I'm soft. While I know it's unlikely he's going to mess with me, when 3 places on your block have been broken into in the last month, you don't want to look like an easy target. You feel better if people think you're likely to wrap a cricket bat around their head if they come through your window.

It's not gonna stop for a long time. Gender disparity in jobs takes a long time to filter out without actively discriminating against the other gender.

People complain about the lack of women in senior management positions in just about every industry, yet completely overlook the fact that most of these people started their careers in late 60s to early 80s, a time when not as many women envisioned themselves working full time for their entire life.

I can guarantee you that in 40 years time 80-90% of senior IT and engineering positions will be occupied by males, because that's the ratio of graduates at present. And I can guarantee you that people will still be complaining about this.

ISLAM and women’s rights are a problematic mix at the best of times, let alone in the current climate of fear and savagery, with fundamentalists causing mayhem in several corners of the world.

Rape, enslavement, murder and wholesale subjugation of women in the name of Islam is taking place in countries such as Syria, Iraq, Nigeria and Afghanistan.

And yet empowered Western women refuse to take a stand against the brutal misogyny seen in Islamic countries, as well as abhorrent practices tolerated much closer to home in the name of cultural diversity.

Vocal feminists continue to fume about trivial or imagined offences, such as sexist air conditioning, gendered toys, prime ministerial winks and menstruation stigmas, and all but ignore the predicament of truly oppressed women.

For reasons I’ll never understand, the mistreatment of the most disempowered women in the world doesn’t seem to inspire much concern from privileged progressives.

While women in Iraq and Syria are subjected to the most sadistic treatment imaginable, we have “the sisterhood” agitating about mindless nonsense.

You can be sure that if the evil perpetrated by Islamic State, al-Qaeda or Boko Haram was being done in the name of another religion or belief system, progressives, including feminists, would be clambering to denounce it.

There would be rallies in the streets, boycotts and well-orchestrated campaigns.

But the loud and proud haters in the modern feminist movement would rather don T-shirts emblazoned with F--- Tony Abbott instead of F--- IS. The latter would be unthinkable.

The bizarre alliance between progressives and Islamists is one unholy hot mess.

It’s a phenomenon that is evident in many Western nations, including the US, Australia and much of Europe.

Maajid Nawaz — co-founder of global think tank Quilliam and founder of Khudi, a Pakistan-based pro-democratic movement — believes Europe’s Left fears “that challenging Islamist extremism can only aid Europe’s far-Right” and thus has turned a blind eye to unspeakable atrocities.

The anti-extremist campaigner has opined about how the unhappy marriage between Islamic fundamentalism and the “regressive Left” has empowered “theocratic fascism”.

Nawaz wrote: “It is my fellow Muslims who suffer most from this patronising, self-pity-inspiring mollycoddling. British Muslims are being spoonfed regressive-Left sedatives, encouraging a perpetual state of victimhood in order to score their petty ideological points against ‘the West’.”

We see the same trend in Australia, where the fear of “Islamophobia” is whipped up to the point where some believe Muslims need to be chaperoned on public transport. The “I’ll ride with you” hashtag, which started with a lie, will go down as one of the dumbest and most disingenuous campaigns of the decade.

What is far more horrifying than the faux fear of Islamophobia is the reality that one in four British Muslims feel sympathy for the terrorists behind the Charlie Hebdo attack, according to polling by ComRes for the BBC.

Again and again, we see ugly, intolerant attitudes that would normally be condemned be tolerated due to cultural sensitivities.


Another reputable poll conducted in 2009 showed British Muslims had zero tolerance for homosexuality.

Not one of the 500 Muslims polled in the Gallup Coexist Index believed homosexual acts were morally acceptable.

Is it any wonder not much is said about IS throwing gay men from buildings and stoning those who survive the fall?

A gay couple denied a wedding cake in Colorado received more sympathy and coverage than the gay men slaughtered in the name of Islam in the Middle East.

And despite all the column inches devoted to rape culture by feminists, little was said when a real case of rape culture was uncovered last year in the West in the English city of Rotherham.

The systematic abuse of more than 1400 children was not properly investigated because authorities were fearful of appearing racist, because the complaints were against mainly Pakistani men. Here was a genuine example of rape culture that took place on a massive scale, yet the sisterhood hardly gave the scandal a second thought.

The cowardice of the modern feminist movement is matched by other so-called “progressives”, who prefer to aim at conservatives instead of radicals of a religion that is as intolerant as it is merciless.

There’s hardly a week goes by when we don’t learn about some new horror perpetrated against women by Islamist groups and regimes.

This month, IS murdered 19 female hostages who refused to submit to sexual slavery, and details emerged of a catalogue listing the prices and ages of children and women for sale. Girls aged between one and nine command the highest prices, followed by adolescent girls. Women older than 40 cost as little as $60.

The latest reports emerging from Yazidi slave girls who have escaped IS paint a horrifying picture, where rape and enslavement is not only used as a weapon of war and a recruitment tool but promoted by the group as a means of worshipping God.

Meanwhile, our grievance feminists indulge in outrage orgies over insignificant claptrap and ignore real misogyny in its cruellest and most barbaric forms, whether it’s the plight of Yazidi girls in Iraq or the increasing numbers of Muslim girls in the West subjected to female genital mutilation.

The silence of the sisterhood is a betrayal of every girl and woman persecuted in the name of Islam.

I think most people see third wave feminism for what it is. Unfortunately a lot of their work is starting to underpin our legal system. Ayaan Hirsi Ali generally calls it for what it is, feminism these days picks their mark. They aren't really interested about third world problems beyond tweeting about them. I think the best thing blokes can do is become aware of what 'third wave feminism' is, and steer clear of careers in which it influences, which isn't many. Tech and maths are always going to be a safe option for guys - complicated fields that require patience, logic and reason.

It's not just Panahi. There are many women from the Islamic world who have called out modern Western feminists for their pettiness, selfishness and lack of perspective. You see let me explain it to you. Women have utereses. They give birth. Based on that biological fact there is a false assumption that women should be the primary care givers once they finish breast feeding (which is a total myth). As a result of this myth few men do the hard yards and put their career in a holding pattern while they pick the kiddies up from school etc. This creates structural problems in the workforce that inhibit the career aspirations of woman that would NOT otherwise exist if men and woman shared the post breast feeding responsibilities of child rearing equally. The whole thing is based on a demonstrably false and sexist assumption - see its not that hard.

You and the rest of the white males can write a book "Cry Freedom" about the horrible crimes against your gender created by an advertisement that quotes verifiable facts
