It seams every other club board has got a thread on him so I didn't think we deserved to miss out. Seemingly wants to come back to Victoria (although until the player themselves actually says this its all rumour). How much would he demand on the open market considering he has played only a handful of games but has enormous potential. I believe the cats were keen on him 2 years ago, but picked Kane Tenace instead. I see it that our only chance to get him would be if Bartel or Johnson asks to be traded, which I hope does not happen. He could turn out to be a lot cheaper than the other names being thrown around Tarrant, Fevola and Whitnall. He would fit in well with the youth policy of the club and could just be the CHF we are looking for.

Thoughts ???

I think there are only about 600 more players on AFL lists for you to describe as 'the CHF we are looking for'. Shannon Grant is on the market apparently. Toby Thurstans? Camporeale? Roger James? All better than Henry, I'm sure.

And really, who says we are looking for a CHF? Is that the recruitment plan this year? I doubt it. In fact I would be surprised if we draft any tall players this year, other than perhaps one ruckman. Our list has been top-heavy for the last two years. The focus will be on pace to break up our same-y midfield.

I think we saw when we had a run of injuries that our midifeld depth is questionable (Rahilly, Thurley, Koula, Tenace, Byrnes just weren't up to it when all in the side together). That should be the priority, not looking for another Brett Spinks.

GM

PS Tarrant and Fevola are not, never have been and never will be centre half forwards. Fev is a classic full forward, Tarrant is a fast leading flanker.

He'd want to have put on a bit of weight since i last saw him.

Made Mackie look positively obese.

Until kicking a recent bag , he really has done nothing to suggest he would be better than most of the talls on our list. I would say just by what I have seen of him, he appears to be more a FF rather than CHF. Next years draft is reputed to be another super draft so I feel its better to hold off and then go hard next year, unless we lucked out on very good deal say Haynes and P2 or something of that nature

With Motlop asking for a trade, I can see Watts being implemented into a trade to swing both players back home (or in Motlop's case, closer to home).

Wouldn't hurt to have a ping at him though. You won't ever know if you're in it until you put in an offer.

Had a bit of a look at the first half of his 10 goal game on ABC2 last night, 6 goals in the first half , 4 from chest marks, 1 from a fumble from a defenders error, 1 a good mark over head quickly brought to his chest.6 kicks , 6 goals
Impressions
Not esspecially strong over head, didnt look super agile , good kick solid kick for goal.

Was he playing on a quality defender or the usual undersized, vanilla SANFL defender?

Turbo may be able to confirm or clear it up, but Adelaide and Port fans alike claim Watts had to contest with Stephen Gilham and Damon White.

Last time I saw, Gilham was a bit of a tweener though.

Can I plagiarise another Blues poster?

This is what another Bluesfan by the name of 79Vintage wrote about him elsewhere.

Watched Fergus' big game last night. Some points.

*Pretty much played out of the goal square, worked up ground on few occasions
*Both his two opponents played from behind and didn't provide strong opposition
*led well to the ball but not sure if you could call him 'fast', plus took a lot of chest marks
*Solid kicking style, nabbed a few from the dreaded Football Park pockets.
*Took a nice mark down close to the ground, gave off a great handball which resulted in a goal
*More impresive in the 2nd half as when the intensity of the game rose, so did his efforts.
* Has an individual kicking technique, but very solid and has improved since U18's
*Has a very strong set of legs but upper body still light for his stature.

Overall, couldn't say too much bad about his performance, but wouldn't get too excited. Needed to see him under more pressure, Setanta has looked as, if not more impressive in the VFL, which is a better standard of comp.

Gilham was very loose in the first half and was moved off him after 1/2 time but it wasnt Damon White who was on him. Occasionally Gilham got in front of him on the lead but there was no obvious double teaming.
Although he kicked 6 in Q1/Q2 I wasnt that wrapped in the way he got the ball, thinking of KK and the amount of times he has the ball taken away from him when trying to mark on the chest.
However, after watching the second half on tape I will say I was more impressed with him.He could have had 12 but missed a couple but the way he got the ball was better.Once he got his confidence up he took 2-4 over head nice marks but he is not a high fligher, and not really a body on body, more on the lead type.He is a good kick, good routine and has confidence that his kicks will be the same shape , a slight draw, allowing him to aim right and draw it back.In our side he would be as good a kick as any of our forwards and better than most I'd say.
With good delievery he would a few kick goals in the AFL but I querry his mobility when his doesnt get the ball.In a comparison to NA23 Id still rather Nathan. He has demonstrated the ability to jump and kick a goal around the corner. If we could get him for one of our lesser forwards plus our R2 he'd be a good get.
