Final Fantasy 7

I haven't enjoyed a good japanese rpg for a long while so sounds good to me. The last Star Ocean was top shelf imo. Great that they are on the 360 as well. Just need Konami to make a new Suikiden and I'll be happy.

Then you have Tales of Vesperia, and Infinite Undiscovery looking really good too.

It was, the may hvae re-used it for Crisis Core? Iono.

True.

yup, you got me there hehehe :P

forgot about the tech demo but recently finished the english version of crisis core. Its a great scene though....... was what got me excited to play through the PSX FF7 again.... didn't even realise it was from the opening scene until I saw the lego figurine cgi >,<

anyways tech demos mean nothing...... *cough cough* killzone 2 cgi....*cough*

Don't forget the PS2 FF8 tech demo of the ballroom dancing scene. No games came out of that

yeah, Jabso is right about the countless remakes.... first on the GBA, then on the DS and the PSP. Its getting alittle out of control and frankly alittle stale :/

Square are giving a lot of love to the 360 at the moment too:

It begs the question, if the XBOX360 has the premier lineup of console japanese rpgs and still has the ridiculous marketshare...... what the fug will make the japanese buy microsoft's console?

Will they have to do something drastic like buy square enix?

I don't know that anything would. Do you think MS already have an arrangement with Square to release timed and full exclusives? Is it development costs on the Sony machine?

Blue Dragon sold well in Japan, and Tales of Vesperia should. Star Ocean might. That's a couple of big series there.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic with this comment or not. One of the most promising things about KZ2 is the fact that techdemo was criticised so heavily for being a cut scene and not really indicative of the gaming experience at the time - then actually turned out to be completely indicative of it once gameplay videos started leaking.

That KZ2 demo was legit. That's why so many people are pumped about it.

It's strange isn't it. Even I would have to agree the 360 has more JRPG exclusives, including timed exclusives. I think the problem is the genre itself has suffered from a huge lack of quality over the last few years.

The only quality JRPG I've played recently is Folklore. That Lost Odyssey was complete trash and I haven't give a chance to those other ones because they all look so damned generic.

I hate to say it, but unless FF13 is truly top shelf and reinvents both the series and the genre - JRPG will be dead.

They'll never crack Japan. The Japanese would never buy electronics from Americans in significant numbers. You can hardly blame them either, it would be the same as Australians importing racists from other countries, when we already have so many top shelf, home grown, racists here.

It's got as much to do with culture and a mild distrust of anything foreign, than it does with any sense of nationalism.

The point I was making wasn't about the graphical quality itself....but that they misrepresented cgi as real game footage.

Therefore fanboy skeptic rule no 1: tech demos are all hype until proven innocent. (arguably they mostly have been)

who knows..... I haven't heard much about a certain series starting with chrono for a long time..... maybe thats a good place to concentrate on considering that Square has too much invested in FF13 on PS3 already....

Like I said I wasn't sure what you meant by the comment. I agree with you on this one.

What do you mean by 'too much' ?

And we can only DREAM of a new Chrono! :)

Gotta say Karl that after the crap you've copped (from me included) this post is top shelf. Particularly like the last comment.:thumbsu:

I remember the golden years of the the ps1 and I spent 400+ hours of my life on Japanese rpg's (Suikiden, Star Ocean, FF7 and a few others). Problem is that imo japanese games in general is in trouble. Mostly I'm seeing rehashes of characters and gameplay (with a tweak here or there) but thats it. MGS4 I'm truly excited about but otherwise I think its more of the same. Hopefully these next gen rpgs can offer something different.

FF7 is probably the greatest game ever made. I loved it back in the day, with XenoGears and Chrono Cross coming in just behind it.

too much as in they have alot of moolah riding on FF13 without seeing any return yet.

As the game has a 2009/2010 release at best due to PS3's low install base.......

I doubt they're going to do anything but play it safe until they see a big return on investment.

Remember that Japan is going through somewhat of a console recession at the moment. Hardcore gaming is not what it used to be. Handheld and casual gaming is the rage.

Hopefully they've learnt the lessons from the FF movie fiasco.

Valkyria Chronicles looks like a nice up and coming RPG.

I love the watercolour effect, something different.

I was actually trying to say why wouldn't they make a FF7 remake for the DS if they were going to make one for a hand held console since (and I stand to be corrected) the DS sales are also very strong, apparently 70 million consoles worldwide.

I don't really care though, I'm not the biggest FF fan or a DS "fanboi!!!!111".

Probably why they're making Agito; low cost, gets caught up in the hype for XIII and Versus (both of which are looking very good from the limited info they've released on them), phone game, should make a tidy profit even if it's only released in Japan. The whole compilation is supposed to be costing around 100 billion yen. That's an investment.

Anyway, back on to Final Fantasy VII...
