Had one running a week or 2 back but now that it seems our PSD pick is down to 2 players who would you prefer to get a senior spot.

Gourdis - 193cm 88kg 14/3/88 KP type with great athletic ability but question marks over his kicking.

Collard - 182cm 90kg 4/12/88 HF/midfield type with a heap of ability but question marks over his attitude.

I haven't added Pfeiffer as it seems we think he'll slide into the rookie draft. Rumour is who ever we leave out of Gourdis and Collard will be taken by in the PSD.

I also think Howatt will be re-rookie however I would like to see us take on Callinan as our mature aged rookie

It's odd to see that Collard is actually 9 months younger then Gourids according to those dates. I wouldn't mind who we pick up. Both meet our needs. With Brown being 30 and Pettifer 26, we need another genuine small foward to fill the role in a couple of years rather then a part-time mid. This is where Collard is handy

However, we really need Schultz/Hughes to pull their fingers out and more pressure by Gourdis will do this.

Guy Richards. He brings much needed height and veteran leadership to our list. I think picking a ruckman at 1 in the PSD is a safe move with potentially great short-term consequences.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'd love Gourdis, but the club has made a point this year of recruiting guys that are good kicks. Gourdis has a question mark against his name when it comes to kicking so I've gone for the smaller Collard whose disposal by foot is very good. I think that will get him over the line.

I was just wondering if anyone has any links to highlights of Collard?
Also how does the PSD and rookie draft work, its done over the internet IIRC? Is it possible to listen in on it or wheres best to find out who we picked up ASAP.

The PSD takes about 2 minutes.

Then the Swans and Lions have the chance to list locals prior to the rookie draft. The Lions have suggested they won't and the Swans generally don't have too much to choose from.

Then the rookie draft works exactly the same as the main draft - it will probably take an hour.

Nowdays the rookie draft is basically just extra rounds of the main thing.

If we take Gourdis we are taking a guy who is going to need at least 3 years so we may as well put him on the main list. Collard could go mental before round 1 and go home - so safest to rookie list him.

Don't know Gourdis is 3 years away, he does'nt have to develop much physically, needs to improve his smarts, kicking and work rate. An AFL pre season and the right coaching could see a different kid come NAB cup time, could be ready to have some imput 2009

Wishful thinking board. Too many people persist with the belief that kids will step straight out of the junior ranks into the seniors. Particularly big blokes. Happens once in a blue moon.

Tigers to try ruck or young gun
09 December 2007 Sunday Herald Sun

RICHMOND'S football hierarchy will meet tomorrow to decide between taking a recycled ruckman or a youngster in Tuesday's pre-season draft.

The Tigers have the No. 1 pick in a thin draft, with Carlton next cab off the rank.
The Blues are also exploring the option of injecting more youth, although former Docker Ryley Dunn remains on the radar.

Whichever way those clubs go, it appears they will leave Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs with a clear run at the only biggish names in the draft - Ashley Sampi and Scott Welsh.

The Tigers have examined the prospects of three ruckman in the pre-season - former Magpies Guy Richards and David Fanning, and ex-Bomber Tristan Cartledge.

Richmond has also invited a bunch of youngsters to Punt Rd in preparation for Tuesday's draft and the rookie draft, which follows immediately afterwards.

They include Will Sullivan (Western Jets), Trent Zomer (Eastern Ranges), David Gourdis (Subiaco), Daniel Boyle (Murray Bushrangers), Ian Callinan (Central Districts), Clayton Collard (East Fremantle), Joe Gazzo (Coburg), Andrew Horne (Coburg), Cam Howat (Richmond rookie), Jarrod Silvester (Coburg), Chris Varsamakis (Eltham) and Chris Waller (Beaumaris).

Sullivan, Zomer and Gourdis are all tall prospects expected to be in the mix.

Carlton is believed to be angling towards taking an untried youngster, elevating rookie Michael Jamison or punting on Dunn, a former Fremantle utility.

Dunn, 22, was taken by Fremantle at No. 10 in the 2003 national draft.

But injuries stalled his career. He has played five games in the past three years, only one in 2007, in Round 22 against Port Adelaide.

But he is well known to Carlton's football chief Steven Icke and national recruiting manager Wayne Hughes, who both worked for the Dockers.

Dunn has continued training with Fremantle since the season finished, but the Dockers don't have a pick until No. 6 on Tuesday.

Melbourne is likely to gamble on the talented but erratic Sampi with the No. 3 pick.

The troubled Sampi, 23, was one of the highest-rated youngsters in the land when West Coast took him with No. 6 pick in the 2001 draft.

The Western Bulldogs look to have all but stitched up former Adelaide and Kangaroos forward Scott Welsh, 29, who left the Crows after 129 games over a contract dispute. He has been offered a two-year deal at Whitten Oval.

Please don't let it be any of the 3 ruckmen named. Although I can see the reason why they would go for one I think having 4 ruckmen with Polak in an emergency is enough for now.

Don't think we'll go for a ruckman in the PSD, but we may rookie one. I believe we have already told Richards we won't be drafting him. Sullivan has been training with us but he is one I haven't heard too much about. Anyone got any info on him - as a junior and how he has been training?

Weaver your too pesimistic about kids taking yrs and yrs to develop. Sure to reach there peak they will take a while, but not every kid has to have 3 yrs down at Coburg to finally play seniors.. We should expect kids to be pushing for senior selection in there 1st yr or else we'll go backwards!

I think Gourdis is the man to pick and have a fair impact playing 7-10 games this yr.. An impact like Mitch Clarke did in his first yr would be nice

gourdis is a bit older than others but i agree he will still need time

collard if fit will be ready to go round 1 which might be the thing that sways tw and co

You could argue that Collard's attitude makes him the riskier option... but I would say that picking up more players with poor skills is even more riskier when looking at our list.

I don't care if Gourdis becomes a dominant forward, he's not going to kick crucial goals to win you games, he's more likely to kick it out on the full to allow the opposition win the game.

That's too frustrating and I can't stand goalkickers who can't kick straight, it just saps momentum out of the whole team.

Now if he had some defensive skills that would be a whole different story.....
