Lol, what? I hate the conspiracies against Geelong apparently getting the rub of the green in every single match, but the umpires definitely played no part in handing Hawthorn that one.

Lol, what? I hate the conspiracies against Geelong apparently getting the rub of the green in every single match, but the umpires definitely played no part in handing Hawthorn that one.

Umpiring was shocking all around, and a couple of crucial decisions to Geelong (Rioli mark, Rivers out on the full) blanketed what was otherwise a shocking umpiring display in which Hawthorn seemed to have gotten the full benefit. There was one point in the second quarter where Motlop had the ball, got tackled, handballed it in front of him, continued to get tackled and didn't get the free kick. That was just one.

Not to mention the Hawthorn goal that hit the post.

Ignoring the umpiring, that was an unbelievable game. Best for the year? Such a good finals series so far, hopefully sydney can take it up to freo tomorrow night. I'm on the purple train next week though if they get there.

Tonight proves how important winning qualifying finals is. You could just about guarantee that if the cats got a break they'd have been back on even money with the Hawks in a GF.

I'm glad I didn't switch my loyalty to the Hawks when I moved to the Eastern suburbs in 1979. I couldn't afford all of the trips back to Melbourne to see them play in the Grand Finals.

That's fine. You're considered still in possession if you just hand ball it in front of you. I know it's a fine line sometimes with that one but I'm happy the umpires didn't pay it in a pre-lim.

How good was gunston last night. 22 touches and 4 goals in a prelim. Hawthorn and Sydney show that trading is an underrated method to building a premiership team, and that done right, it can be highly effective.

Why the hell should Brian Lake deserve the opportunity to play in a GF Dannn? I could think of far better quality people who deserve the chance before him ......... people like Chris Grant, Brad Johnson, Scott West, Rohan Smith, Doug Hawkins and Steve Wallis to name a few.

It should be remembered that he damaged our chances badly of playing a GF a few years ago when he gave away a stupid free kick to Nick Reiwoldt after half time in the Preliminary Final. Didn't think the free was there, but there was simply no need for Lake to cause the contact in the first place.

Sorry, but I am always bitter a this time of year when I have to watch everyone else enjoy watching their team compete in a GF. The possibility of another interstate/expansion club getting appearance won't help either. Can you believe that every new club (excluding GC & GWS) will have played in a GF since we last played in one 53 years ago!!!

Plus, West Coast, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Port Adelaide have all won premierships.mgive me the absolute sh#ts!

I didn't say that the likes of Grant, Johnson, West, Smith, Hawkins and Wallis (nor any other Bulldog) don't deserve to be in a grand final, nor did I say that Lake deserved it more than them. They all deserve it. I think most would agree that, given how hard he's worked to get better, Will Minson deserves the chance to play in a GF before he retires - does that mean they're saying that our club greats don't...? I don't see the relevance.

Lake was a very good player for our football club over a number of years. Yes he had his low points, but the fact of the matter is that without him it's unlikely we'd have done as well as we did in our 'best' years. He was a crucial part of our team for years and a valuable contributor. Sure, he had some brain fades and cost a few goals at times, but can you name a player who hasn't? Everybody makes mistakes occasionally. For the most part Lake was a fantastic part of our football club and for that I thank him. A player of his quality deserves the opportunity. The fact that he was a part of our team for so many years just makes my feelings stronger.

I think it will be a bit of a hollow victory for Lake - he's only been at the club for a year; pretty short to be completely overjoyed at the achievement. I mean, he's going to be rapt at experiencing a GF & probably winning, but it won't be as good as it would have been if he got one with the 'Dogs.
He might do a Bwian Bwainfade in the GF anyway under all that pressure!
