Fine for criticism of umpires

Umpires are now coached to believe they are elite sportsmen entitled to their share of the limelight, bigger than the game, the kudos and even their own tribute sports cards.

They have ruined the game with their inconsistency and free kicks at every contest.

We should criticise them so that they do not become entrenched in their own importance and further ruin our great game.

Jog On you muppet. The AFLUA (AFL Umpires Association) has built a wall around the umpires shielding them from spotlight and critisism, at no point are they COACHED into THINKING they are bigger than the game. Do you honestly think they wanted their own tribute sports cards?

They have not ruined the game with consistency, they have performed at an elite level this year and I'd love to have an understanding of what basis you have made that assumption from.

Criticism is fine, most local umpires come into clubrooms to have a drink with players and have general chat or banter. Its your types of people that make it pointless as you are not prepared to listen to what we have to say.

AH you must be an umpire official or such of some type that derives an income and glory from being one of these. Can I assume you would be part of setting the direction of umpiring within the game as you believe that the general public and media are happy with what we have now.
They have performed at elite level is in your mind and not many others.

My basis is that the game is carp to watch, free kick at every contest, umpires in every ones faces, stop-start game, inconsistencies with decisions that is confusing and unfair, influencing the outcome games, no understanding with what a contest is about, not award the obvious free kicks and let the game flow, making the game over complicated and difficult to umpire and understand. We had a game that was great for 100 or so years and in the last few years there has been so many changes that has ruined it.

You expect the public to pay up their hard earned money and then also expect them to accept the rubbish and inconsistencies that is ruining our game with this “free kick at every contest and look how good I am mentality.

I admire the umpires at lower grades as they are good guys and contribute to the game and generally do not have free kick mentality. They award the obvious free kick and let the game flow. This footy is far better to play and watch than the AFL rubbish. It will be long before the AFL Umpires association ruins local footy as well.

Sitting next to AFL player on the on the plane I asked him about the umpires. He had nothing but contempt for them, their attitude and the way they treated and spoke to players. They do not have drinks, chats or banter with the players.

I contribute my hard earned money direct to the football club as I no longer go to games because of the umpiring inconsistencies and free kick mentality that has ruined the game. Thousands of others are doing the same.

Not allowing the criticism of the umpires takes away one of our fundamentals of democracy and ruining our great game. I sat through a session on channel 10 where they should how umpires decisions and inconsistencies can change the outcome of the game. It was appalling and disgraceful.

One thing that amazes me is the free kicks at ruck situations - for f***ks sake let them go at it, there are sooooo many free kicks at the rucks nowadays, and every time the whistle is blown, not one person in the stadium knows who is going to get a free kick. I think you make some very good points Jarman, i understand the AFL wants to encourage youngsters to come through and umpire, but when there are performances that are so far below a reasonable standard like last Friday night, why should they be the only ones who can avoid criticism - it is almost like they are Fidel and no one can say a word against the regime rulers.

I agree with you Hangzhou Dogs. Pick the obvious free kicks and let the game flow.

Hense my frustration - we have no idea from game to game as the AFL umpires association has made it so complicated to umpire a game, who the hell would want too. This then adds to the frustration and people abuse the umpires.

I haven't had a chance to sift through the last few posts - they look a bit wordy but think you'll find your beef is actually with the rules committee. It's a bit like finding a 60 kmh zone in the middle of a highway in the middle of nowhere. No point in abusing the policeman for giving you a ticket as he didn't install the 60 kmh zone. In fact, he might think the speed limit is as stupid as you would. But at the end of the day he's getting paid to write tickets if anyones speeding...

And btw, the Umpires Association have nothing to do with rules or interpretations. That Assoc is just a body that looks after the umpires interests and requirements, looks after social events, life members dinners, etc. I think you mean the coaching staff in conjunction with the rules committee.
