Due to the nature of the job it most definitely attracts some absolute pricks but still for the main part they are generally just regular decent people doing their best and pretty fair.

Bad apples in every crop. But being a cop largely is a pretty much thankless job open to constant abuse. Pay is not great and not remotely commensurate to what dangers they face. The average citizen (or keyboard warrior) has simply no flipping idea of the stresses and descisions having to be made on the frontline in a blink of an eye.
The prevailing attitude of some painting them as power hungry fascists is just juvenile in the extreme.
