As far as cardio/endurance goes, Triathletes are the fittest athletes going 'round, bar none. Depending on the distance, it goes for the longest duration, and it uses more muscles in your body than any other single sport. You don't have the speed/power of, say a Boxer or AFL player, but your long, slow, endurance ability is second to none.

If you're involved in some other sport (e.g. AFL), and you want to include some sort of training into your pre-season to give you a "base" fitness, Triathlon would have to be it. You could vary the distances and intensities to suit your needs, but nothing tops a combination of swimming + cycling + running. What makes Triathlon incredibly difficult is transitioning from the bike to running; you're using different leg muscles which makes the transition incredibly awkward/painful for the first several km's of the run. Running with fresh legs is nothing like running in a Triathlon. Chalk and cheese.

I've met two people that have actually completed an Iron Man distance Triathlon in Australia, and they both said it was the hardest thing they've ever done in their lives. One of them said he couldn't walk properly for nearly a week. The bloke I met most recently said that while the run was the hardest leg of the three sections, he said the final few km's was just the most amazing, elating feeling he's ever experienced in his life. Words just cannot describe it.

What gets me about this Iron Cowboy bloke is his ability to back up one Ironman distance after another, day after day. Just incredible.

I can do that.
That's how I qualify for the other thread "Fat. Beyond belief."
