I've never been truly impressed by Flanagan's writing. The fact he's a poet probably has something to do with it, and a flowery prose that kind of irks me a little. This year, however, I've read his Melbourne columns voraciously, mainly to get a better idea of the inner workings of the club and the people behind it, and it's been an interesting concept - I'm really glad it was Melbourne he chose and not the usual suspects.

This is his final column for the year, it seems:

my favourite bit is this, which I guess is why he's a good writer, cos he made me mad that Robbo is leaving. I wasn't mad before:

'In the 18th century, Dr Samuel Johnson said when you tire of London, you tire of life. I say when you tire of players like Russell Robertson, you tire of Australian football. Go Dees!'

The guy is an absolute clown, he thought grimes was a forward!
Steady on buddy, he may have mixed up a few names and positions around the place but the majority of his articles have all been positive press for the Dees, which is something we don't get too often.

My thoughts exactly, he's written about parts of our club that, as a lifelong supporter, I love to read about...

Martin Flanagan is the only journalist that I bother reading in the Age sports section. He runs rings around Lyon, Buckley and Walls who spout out the same cliched garbage in most articles. He's about as beautiful as a writer gets who is just talking about the weekend's football.

His superb writing skill easily makes up for a couple of errors in names or positioning.

Read his article from TAE during my "exile" (I'll still be very active on TAE btw)

Martin Flanagan is an excellent writer IMO.

I remember his writing back during Fitzroy's darkest hours, and he was superb, especially by comparison to most others...

Cool :thumbsu:

Hopefully we'll get more good reports from him next year too, even though he's not "embedded" now...
