That's a fair compromise, no?

That's a tangent to the main issue, that being that he was contractually obligated to keep his prejudicial opinions zipped up. Do you think he should have no repercussions for breaking a legally binding contract that he willingly signed?

More appropriate, don't use having one to justify some shocking attitudes toward people on the basis of their sexuality.

I'm not sure. That's what the discussion is about. I argued that Ablett had signed a contract with GC and was obligated to see it out, but the contract didn't seem to count for much.

Ablett not honouring his contract was not going to make major sponsors pull the plug which the club is reliant on.

Would've thought a contract was binding no matter what the conditions. Might be different if the conditions are found to violate someone's constitutional rights.

Will be interesting to see how the AFL handles this latest development given its support for the gay marriage campaign.

Only because his employer chose to release him from his contractual obligation, an option the ARU didn't agree to with Folau. Therein lies the difference.

His contract was binding. Ablett asked to be released from his contract a year earlier and his request was denied.

If he hasn't broken his contractual obligations, the only reason to drop him is because of form...and his form seems fine.

If footballers were dropped for being dumb campaigners, there would be a Hell of a lot of 'outs' next week. Pun intended.

The two go hand in hand. Religion is little more than a socially acceptable and protected 'shocking attitude'.

He could be dropped if Geelong felt he was damaging their brand. Will never happen unless Ablett doubles down and actually said something to the same effect as Israel Folau.

I know enough religious people whose religion does make them genuinely better people, who campaigned within their churches for change in their attitudes toward gay rights.

Bachar Houli said something similar after the AFL doubled his suspension.

"I treated the situation as this was meant to be from God. It’s a true test. How will you respond? Complain and turn away from your beliefs and say, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ Or accept it. And I purely thought I passed the test."

Granted he probably doesn't need the money, but Folau is standing on principle. And maybe hoping RA will come around when the situation defuses.

Interesting. I can honestly say I've never met anyone who is objectively a better person simply because of their religion. I know good people who are religious, but they would be equally good without their faith, and often are good despite the tenents of their faith.

In my experience, religion is far better at bringing out the worst in people than their best. Folau is a prime example of that.
 
Personally I get annoyed when people use religion as an excuse for having shitty outdated views. Start blaming the individual and stop giving campaigners excuses to hide behind.
I'm not passing judgement on Christianity, I know plenty of lovely people who are Christians. But Folau is a campaigner, his views are of a campaigner and he deserves to lose his job for being a stupid homophobic dickhead. I'm not blaming religion, I'm blaming him.
In Australia, you have the liberty to say "I'm of x religion but think this aspect of it is outdated". He had the choice and opportunity to do so and failed.

I should add to that, that there is of course no alternate universe where such a person is nonreligious, that you can make comparison to ;)

Really? He's effectively telling RA his principles aren't for sale. You can disagree with the principles but you have to give him credit for stoicism.
 
he has me and everybody else going to hell on multiple counts and i simply don't care that he posted that rubbish, if the media didn't beat it up i would have never known, i still want him to play at the world cup.
