Anyone have any sort of insight as to how I can actually get the game to install properly, let alone run...

I have tried all the suggestions I have recieved to date, to no apparent success.

Every time I try and install it tells me it needs to update some files to my machine, then restart.

Following the restart it just says the same thing - I cannot progress any further than this!

Well I got the game working, I had the same problem as you with the update system files etc...

But what you do is not run the Setup.exe file, but rather the zip file that is extracted from the original zip file. Once you open that you extract the files manually.

From those files, you select footyPack.exe and install the data files.

Then from there you just run Footy Fanatic AE.exe and the game is up and running.

I started a pre-season match and finished playing the game, but I have noticed a few bugs inside the game (aren't there always with freebie games) For instance, when I went to team management after the match and clicked on salaries, the game just exited with an error saying 'data not found' or something along those lines. But Im guessing if you stay away from that, you will be able to play the actual season with not too much probs.

I got Windows ME and someone mentioned that OS in an earlier response (Footy Fanatic did), and I got around the setup problem so I don't think its that it doesn't work in Windows 2000, you just gotta know your way around it and do everything maually to get the game up and running.

But you say Deestroy that it works for you now that your off Windows 2000? Hmmm...weird. What OS do you use now?

I use '98 now and it works fine.
2000 is shocking for all games in my experiance.

2000 is more used for networking and stuff like at schools. (My TAFE I go to now also uses Windows 2000 Pro as its OS in the PC Labs)

But I wasn't really aware that it sucked for games, I thought it handled them quite well. I used it last year at my old school with networking games like Counterstrike, Alien vs Predator etc...when we had VET IT classes but no work to do due to finishing it all, or just being lazy.

The reason I mentioned Windows ME is because of a recent e-mail I got who wrote the following:

I tried to install using the setup file and it moved onto an auto-installation screen where the program said it was installing 7 *.DLL files. When it got to the end it gave an error message along the lines of "some of your system files are too old. would you like setup to fix this problem. this will require a restart. Yes or No." (Note: I have Windows ME and regularly run Windows Update).

I have only ever tested the game on Windows 98 and Windows XP but I know for Windows 2000 users they can get around a common problem by downloading updated files from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e9-dde7-4a60-b586-5d4fd6794db6&DisplayLang=en

However you would have to be able to run the install program first before doing this. When the installer restarts see if it has created a Footy Fanatic folder with the footypack.exe in it. If you run that and download the above url you might be able to get it up and running (I wish I could be a bit more confident).

I should also mention that everything related to this error has been replaced in the next version of Footy Fanatic and should be a lot more stable.

Well that problem with using the setup.exe about updating system files that are out of date is for everyone (across all OS systems).

But all you have to do is unzip Footy Fanatic AE.CAB and then from those unziped files run the footyPack.exe to install the data lists. So all is good, you just don't actually use the setup.exe file that comes with it, you unzip the CAB file manually.

So you can add Windows ME to the list of OS Systems that have been tested and working with the game. Maybe the person who sent you the email just wasn't very competent with computers (which would be a good reason to make a setup.exe that actually works so the average user doesn't have to install manually, as some can find that difficult as has been reported).
