Not a bad collection of rucks. Thompson and Moore absolute champions. Monkhorst one of the better bash and crash rucks.

Monky would have loved playing ruck in the current game.

A good ruck coach would be essential with the three younger rucks we have on the list (including Wood). Most rucks hit their prime from 25 to 28 so I hope that augurs perfectly for Woody this season.

Definitely agree that this is an area we need to address, particularly in conjunction with our apparent switch in attitude towards the value of the ruck.

After seemingly placing little value in ruck options for a long period, we targeted Wood and then Jolly shortly after at a relatively high cost, eventually finding the missing piece. We've since brought Ceglar to the club despite Wood still being on the fringe and the knowledge that Witts was on the horizon.

We have more in our ruck stable than I can remember us having previously, we need to capitalise on the likes of Ceglar and Witts through improved development whilst also trying to find more improvement within Wood.

I was surprised that alarm bells didn't seem to ring, or that changes weren't made, when Jolly made it public that he hopped on the phone to his ruck coach at the Swans in order to try and turn around his form during the first half of last season.

If that wasn't an indictment on the ruck coaching at our club, I don't know what is.

It's pretty obvious who should be our next ruck coach/development....Jolly.He's smart towards his end of his career, is good with younger blokes, has always been a great bodywork guy....Collingwood should hold onto Jolly, his work ethic, smarts.Jolly would be a great mentor for these young blokes, has tasted success at 2 clubs, big game player.Jolly is gold for the club, sign him up now.

I was just thinking the same thing, at this time he is basically our ruck coach anyway, as he would be working with all the other big men on a daily basis (when they return from the break) to improve all their skills.

As long as Jolly is fit, he plays for the next 2 seasons, but after that his contract runs out, and it would be remiss of the club not to try and retain his services even after his contract runs out.

Have to agree.Have always been impressed how he has always handled himself. He is not a d@#$head like Everitt or as dumb as Monky and is a better driver than Gardner.Ooozes respect from the young blokes.

Throw Josh in there, as a decent player tho not much of a ruck, and you've got 4 ruckman in four decades. The rest, disrespect not intended, don't make the grade. Not a great record. Wasn't Michael Christian ruck coach at one stage?

Poor recruitment? Poor development? What about add poor management to that list. Over the last decade the pies have gone in 'ruck' undermanned for too many matches. Is it simply a coincidence we have a terrible recent record in getting fit, in form ruckmen playing finals matches?

I think perhaps you missed 2010.
Just to recap we won and Jolly was one of the main reasons we did.

Geelong is the only comparable example and they have Ottens who is similar in style to Jolly.
Hawthorn won in 2008 with a 'second rate' ruckman
