Are we forgetting Sam Marshall?

Kid slotted in seamlessly to our Premiership side last year

But can’t get a look in this year even with all of our injuries (not even as an emergency)

Academy kid from the Sunny Coast too.

What is going on?

With Neale likely leaving at the end of the year (as he should for his kids’ sake) and uncertainty about Zac Bailey, why are we not getting more games into him?

This week, who would you leave out for him?

I may be wrong on this (and yes it's hard to see who he replaces right now) but maybe he's being asked to work on the contested side of his game. He's getting to play inside in the VFL. Even as a winger, yes he can run and his disposal is good, but tackling and pressure are necessary still. You can see Sharp has added more of this to his game with Melbourne now too (though his disposal is not up to Marshall's level).

As far as I can tell you created this thread solely as a ploy to use the title.

Ill Allow It GIF

If Zac or Neale leave, he will slot in somewhere next year. Whilst I agree that we need to try and get games into Marshall this season, I also understand that there are no slots for him right now.

I don't agree that Marshall came in "seamlessly" though, as Marshall made the side due to the lack of players available for the wing position. Fletcher was moved into defence due to the lack of Starce and Answerth, leaving wing spots that Fletcher would've been in. Since then, Marshall did get a run, but he ultimately got replaced by Bruce, who has cemented his spot in the side and is a much better player at this point in time. Marshall isn't there yet, confirmed by his 10/11 touches in the GF, which is fine due to him being a now second-year player.

Now I've mentioned this before, but our team doesn't seem to value the wing position (Marshall's primary position at this point in time) that highly. The only time we overly use the wing position is at the end of quarters, when we want to have another player behind the ball. Outside of this, the coaches use the wing spot as a trial run for mid minutes, with the understanding that these players will eventually go into the centre.

The only exceptions to that in recent years are Berry, who can't play in the centre due to his shoulder, and Mitch Robbo, whose job was just to get the ball and punt it as hard as he could. Ashcroft x 2, Fletcher, Bailey and Bags are good examples of players who have been trialed this way.

Marshall's problem is the same issue Harry Sharp had with us, as he was a running machine who was born to be a winger, but was in a team where we don't necessarily value running wingers. Sharp's now with the Demons and seems to be valued higher there due to his running and being able to linkup/play stints as a small forward.

With all that being said, I do hope we re-sign Marshall for at least another couple of years, as Berry is 28 now and won't be around forever. But unless we get an injury to Berry or Bruce, I don't see how he gets a game, unless he learns another position (small forward probably).

No one. Realistically there's always going to be depth players at premiership and successful clubs that aren't getting a game but could be getting a game elsewhere in the competition. Can't blame him if he leaves for more AFL opportunities

I think you can when hes been given the opportunity to play in a premiership.

How many play in 4 finals in their first year on an AFL list.

If he doesn't think hes good enough to break into our best 23 then sure go play for Richmond

This year is all about winning a 3rd flag in a row. It's not about getting games into young players - though Ty Gallop could be the exception to the rule because there are no standout players in the position he's being asked to play.

If Sam can't currently get into the side on merit due to the quality of players in front of him, then he needs to work on his game in the 2's until he gets his chance.

There will be injuries and he will get a chance.

Coleman into the mix plus a fit Bez... there's not much room on the wings/flanks. I'd prefer him in over Jimmy T I think.

:tearsofjoy: I plead the fifth...

I would make an argument for resting Lachie Neale from time to time this year. Especially on interstate trips.
He was pretty banged up towards the end of last year (1 game in 56 days in the lead up to the GF) and about to turn 33.
From a personal point of view - would give him a few extra weekends to fly over to see his kids in WA as well.

Those absences weren't "banged up", they were serious injuries. Bit of a difference between managing players because of soreness and them being unable to run due to calf tears or the like.

I guess that's Lachie's call. I doubt the club would try and talk him out of it if he broached it, but by the same token we can't just force him to do so.

Yes. I was surprised that they played Tunstill over Marshall.
I can only assume they wanted Sam to work on some aspect of his game in the twos. 🤷‍♀️
Does Marshall play any other positions? Tunstill only came in when Noz was injured because he'd apparently been training as a defender over summer.

Yeah I think Tunstill was selected as the pseudo-sub who could cover multiple positions in case of injury instead of someone who would disturb the midfield rotations

Marshall's just 20. Good enough to hold a position in the finals series in his first year at 19.

I'd guess we have hopes of developing him into a midfielder which seems to be the process at the moment.

He has a heap of pace and is deceptively tall at 6' 2. On my limited viewing of the last reserves match he seemed to stand out a little to my eye.

You just hate losing young players with his profile and I'd be amazed if we did unless there's something going on that we're not privy to.

I can not recall if it was on here or a Lions Facebook group, but there was some scuttlebutt about him being disgruntled about his non selection this season🤔, if so could be seen as not team oriented behaviour?

Could be misremembering or could also be complete bull shite.

Well maybe we're teaching him a lesson. You tend to forget these are kids barely out of school and sometimes it takes a lot to get them to adjust to life as a professional sportsman.

Of course this is likely just conjecture and maybe we think he needs more experience and training to earn a Senior spot.

He'd be a really good player if he could crack it into this team now but he has all the tools to get there.

I hate when I hear stuff like this.

If in fact it is true and you do hear it across the league about first and second year players being disgruntled about not being picked to play in the ones; I do find it extraordinary. I mean for starters, these kids (and thats what they are still) would have been lucky to play 20 games against men, yet they have this expectation they should be walk up starts and if they're not, they want to leave as if things will never change.

I know it was a different era but guys in the 80s'and 90's were playing over 50 games in the twos before even getting a look in at the ones and now this generation wants out. I mean guys like Black and Power only played 9 games in their first season and playerd 22 and 16 the year after or a Des Headland only played 12 games in his first two seasons or Ash McGrath 10 games in 2 seasons and sure their are plenty of examples of Hugh and Bez playing 40 and 37 in their first two seasons, but again we only won 5 games each of those years, whereas Sam is trying to break into a dual premiership team, so there is plenty of time for him particulalry if Lachie leaves and probably Zac.

And in one of the rare times, I agree with Nathan Barley in that if he can't develeop and feels he needs to bugger off and join a Richmond or the like, then off you go, but what pathtic resilience if thats the path he chooses.

Sam Marshall’s contract expires at the end of this year. He will be getting big offers to move to other clubs and will need to decide whether he wants to play in a successful side or play back in Victoria where he will get more midfield minutes and more money. He remains a development player who will get more games once an opportunity arises or his form is so good he can’t be ignored. He appears to be too good to leave in the reserves but he obviously needs to work on aspects of his game as he is not even listed as an emergency at the moment for our 1st team. He will become an excellent AFL player he just needs to develop aspects of his game to play consistently in the 1sts

There is no secret to getting a gig in the firsts. Go back to VFL, tick the coaches boxes and dominate at that level. Dont give the match committee the choice to leave you out because the opportunity will arise. I cant think of too many of our players who have been left hanging in the VFL recently. Jarrod Lyons towards the end?

I wonder if Marshall is not really fitting in with the group as a whole?
I know our boys are generally very open arms and welcoming but he does comes across as a bit of a reserved type.
May also be a little pissed about being pulled at half time in the Granny.

You had great players who had 2 or 3 solid seasons in the reserves back in the day.

I remember Brian Taylor kicking 120 goals in a season in the reserves and not getting a Senior game at Richmond in that year.

I know things have changed but patience isn't a virtue in much abundance in today's world.

Well whoever he really is I wouldn't think he'd have the hubris to think he's better than Lachie Neale.

Maybe he's just a kid who needs a dose of maturity or more likely we're looking to his longer term development and in any case he's not presently going to offer any more than those who are in the team at present.
