Re: Michael Talia Pick #39

Great to see Talia at the doggies.
Even bigger bargain that we got him at pick 39.

Re: Michael Talia Pick #39

From the main discussion thread

SMITH BIO (afl.com.au)

Tough inside left footer with an insatiable desire to win the ball in the air or on the ground. He is relentless at the opposition when they are in possession. He also has the capacity to win contests when outnumbered, which was a feature of his play representing Vic Country in the NAB AFL U18 Championships, at which he won All Australian honours. He had an excellent year

Phantom draft pick Crozier went at 20.

Michael Talia

Rapt for the kid, and this might be a coup for the club. KPD are rare as hen's teeth and even one who is half a chance of becoming a regular is a steal at #39. Looking forward to seeing this kid develop. :thumbsu:

Stoked we have picked this kid up! I hate to sound cliched but we I feel like we got a steal here.

agreed, this was a great steal in this draft, so glad we picked him
i didn't want him to go crows.

Re: Michael Talia Pick #39

Bit of Andrew Dunkleys about his kicking style....

We should start operation - get the brother Talia - cause his brother at Adelaide is a better player - need to coax him home in the coming years !!

Re: Michael Talia Pick #39

A steal at pick #39 - Welcome aboard Talia. Look forward to seeing you hold down a key defensive position for many years to come.

Re: Michael Talia Pick #39

In a weak draft there has to be a reason many clubs stayed off him but it's a great story nonetheless. Clubs tend to refrain from drafting players who are specialist defenders as juniors and will often draft key forwards and turn them into defenders later. Clearly there are exceptions but that seems to have been the trend. I hope he goes on with it - with Shaggy, Morris and Lake all at or near 30, Williams breaking down annually and Markovic best suited to slow KPPs and ruckmen we need tall defensive support.

Re: Michael Talia Pick #39

We don't have a great record with younger brothers (Power, Jamie Grant, Everitt, Jakovich, etc etc).

However I have a feeling this one will be OK.

He's a tall who still has to fill out (and hopefully grow another cm or two). Let's not load him up with expectation. If he gets 1-2 games in 2012 I'll be happy but I wouldn't expect him to start performing at a consistently high level until some time in 2013-14.

Troy West and Pat Bowden are another couple.

Western Bulldogs steal a bargain in AFL national draft with Michael Talia

Sam Landsberger - Leader - 25 November

IT is a wonder Western Bulldogs recruiter Simon Dalrymple escaped detention and heavy police questioning at Sydney airport. Dalrymple and his Dogs offsiders committed theft at last night's AFL National Draft, stealing touted first-round key defender Michael Talia at the bargain price of No. 39.

Re: Western Bulldogs steal a bargain in AFL national draft with Michael Talia

what i like most about this article is
""Someone's going to be looking for a tall to play on (No.1 pick) Jonathon Patton in three years when he is a monster, and Michael Talia can do that," Allison said."

""My first goal will be to earn the respect of the playing group, coaching staff and everyone at the club just through my training and how hard I work and my professionalism," he said."

Great signs for Talia, going to be a star at this club with enough work.

We have to get one right eventually, ...... Don't we? :p

What article?

Must say. Talia looks a good build already. Could play some footy in 2012 without a doubt.

Then he better grow another 2 inches

Re: Western Bulldogs steal a bargain in AFL national draft with Michael Talia

Then he better grow another 2 inches
One of the vids I watched (the Hun maybe?) said he'd already had good games against Patton (197cm, 101kg to Talia's 192cm and 88kg).

If you've got the smarts and the strength it can be done. Ask Dale Morris, who regularly beats bigger and heavier opponents.

only 18, so he's got a bit of growing to do or he could become Morris against him, undersize but still deadly in defense.
