When I was a kid, the Australian GP was on the streets of Adelaide.

Correct from 1985 to 1995 editions. Melbourne businessman and petrol head Ron Walker was determined to get it to Melbourne so he and new Victorian premier Jeff Kennett made Bernie Ecclestone an offer he couldn't refuse. Walker loved motor racing had been Mayor of Melbourne was in charge of Melbourne's 1996 bid for the Olympics that lost to Atlanta, and then saw arch rival Sydney win 2000 Olympics. So he saw this as an important event for Melbourne to host and not let Sydney get ahead in the events game.

Ayrton Senna was extremely popular in Adelaide. He won it twice, usually won pole position but the early years his cars wouldn't make it to the end. He used to get in early and would do things around town including spend a day flying model planes at the secondary airport at Pooraka. There is a plaque near the old race track dedicated to Senna.

"Greatest of all time" is controvertial in Brazil. People here are divided between Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet.

Loved him ever since he was in the John Player Special car. That was a beauty.

Fair enough for Brazil but Piquet never made an impact like Senna did in Australia and many other countries. Here is the plaque they put on the race course for Senna and they named it the Senna chicane as this part of the track is still used in Adelaide 500 V8/Supercar races. The Supercar race track is shorter

The longer track was the grand prix track and the shorter one is the V8's/Supercars track. If you were to walk 600m left of the corner that has 9 on the map below you hit Adelaide's main shopping area of Rundle Mall. From that same corner if you go left and northwards, its about a 1.5km walk to Port Adelaide Oval.

I didn't know much about Senna in 1985 but both on TV and in November when the race was on I thought it was the best looking car because of the colour combination.

Pretty much the same here! One of my good friends at the times father was a huge grand prix fan [ex brit] and would tape every race so I had watched a fair bit of the racing but it was simply the colours that got me following Senna.

Every nation has morons... ;)

One only needs to take a look at Senna's 1993 F1 season, in a vastly inferior McLaren MP4/8, to bear witness to his greatness.

Just look at the caliber of drivers he overtook in that video!

In all seriousness, the only way I can see anyone rating Piquet above Senna would be due to some sort of regional/provincial bias.

This is the 3-year old me, inside Emerson Fittipaldi's car.

Two monsters, with distinct qualities: Senna was absolutely fantastic behind the wheel; but Piquet had a more complete set of skills.

Youtube has great videos on "Piquet v Senna:"

Ill always be disapppinted that we only got 1 year of Le Mans where the full F1 track was used. So much more interesting having all different manufacturers in different classes rather than the very sterile Supercars that only have superficial differences.

Don't get me wrong, Piquet was a phenomenal driver, and I can see what you mean by "a more complete set of skills". I don't necessarily agree/disagree with that statement, but I can see the logic behind it.

Around the outside with opposite lock, unbelievable racing!

I was walking down King William St between North Tce and Hindley St on the Monday after this race. Aryton was arm in arm with his girlfriend. He stopped to say hello and shake hands. 6 months later....gone.

I was part of running an “Internet cafe” at that event. Wasn’t quite how I expected to be spending NYE!

Still got the well worn “Race of a Thousand Years” stubby cooler. Must be one of the rarer sports trivia items out there haha

Everyone in F1 loved the Adelaide street circuit because it was technically challenging.

The Melbourne circuit is a bland sterile cookie cutter. Just like the city really.

I'm currently trying to workout round 1 of the footy and going to the F1s in Melbourne. Proving difficult. God I wish it was in Adelaide. Instead we get local horseshit like the supercars.
