Forward line structure

As I said elsewhere.

In one week we went from...

2 talls (Roo Wilkes) 3 smalls (Milne, Tez, Saad) 1 medium (TDL)

To

2 talls (Roo Kosi) 1 small (Saad) 2 mediums (Lee TDL)

Structure please Scott.

If you are talking about actual size you put a lot in 5mm (
Milne to TDL ) and conveniently ignore that Lee is taller than both Riewoldt and Maister.

If talking about playing style Milne is probably sronger overhead than TDL or Milera.

I'm talking about roles.

Can use key, opportunist and third if you want.

I liked the idea of replacing some of the smalls with resting mids. I think you need 2 talls, 1 medium, 2 smalls, and a resting mid...

On a different note, If I had to have someone kicking for my life I would want it to be Joey Montagna. How many times have you seen him streaming down the right hand boundary on the HFF and kicking it from 50-55 metres on the run on an acute angle and slotting it through. He did it again on Thursday - great stuff!!

I'm just thinking of the way Sandy has used Curren, effectively as a small forward who you know darn well will be a clearance beast in the midfield whenever you need him to.

I liked the structure better with Siposs back in the forward line. The option of just chipping to him at 50m and letting him have a shot is helpful. It's a shame we can't swing Rhys forward while Beau is injured - but (from the pre-game interview when asked about the filth playing tall) Watters said "we've got no other tall defenders we can bring in."

Forward line looked heaps better with Siposs there, took a great overhead mark in the first quarter and then later on banged that goal from fifty off one step if you don't mind. Wowee oh boy the kid has a fair bit of talent on him Richo.

Siposs is deceptively tall. When he took that big grab in the first quarter I thought it was Kosi! The boy is big time.

Thought the same thing, he seems to have grown taller since we recruited him.

He could become a genuine key position player in the future and like Stanley he has the talent and potential to be a superstar of the competition.

The biggest thing I noticed was how Siposs went to ground at most contests. He has to learn to hold his feet! Part of the learning curve.

fwd line structure is very dependent on the form of saad, milne, milera, hyphen and probably the fitness of schneider. but given all of them are either out of form or injured i'd go something like this

HF MEDIUM TALL : REIWOLDT : YOUNG MID
F YOUNG MID : KPF : YOUNG MID

given kozi is out. i'd go with something like this. i'd probably give milne another week just for experience and his creativity

HF Siposs : Riewoldt : Newnes/Murdoch
F Saunders : Lee/Stanley/White/Hickey : Milne/Milera

Siposs should not play that deep. I would suggest half forward but he has to become more defensive.
Riewoldt is CHF - always.
Maybe Lee or Hickey at FF

Bump

Hickey is not a forward

Milera seems too good for the VFL and not quite up to AFL standard.

Maister needs to learn where to lead

Hickey is as green as grass and has plenty to learn. Remember McEvoy 3 years ago.
Milera is way too lazy on the defensive aspects of football. We can't afford a heap of front runners in the forward line. Amaad is not far beind him with lack of defensive pressure.
Maister is not an AFL player. period.

You've just witnessed the drawback of Stanley being required in defence.

Aside from the Zebs having more run in the second half, they were never without the option of kicking blindly to the hotspot.

Did it a number of times with two of Hickey, Lever and White always available to contest along with a couple of mobile mid-sized options (Shenton and Milera) - and then a couple of feverish small players via Ong or Michaliades or Minchington.

This is something that the Saints have erred in, although the mosquito theory might have been a goer if they (Milne, Saad, Milera, Dennis-Lane, Schneider) had all been fit and in good form.

I think a number of us have been thinking that the 4 talls / mobile marking players and two in-form smalls was the go though.

Personally I really do think that when your mids are under pressure (as we are) the team has to have more marking power and options that can have a ping from the paint.

Maybe we'll have the cattle in time, but it's a bit of a squeeze at the minute with Rhys down back and Sippa out of form.

Shirtfront (more than a bump!)

Here would be my ideal forward setup
Milne-Hickey-Saad
Siposs-Riewoldt-Dunnell

Lets use Siposs and Dunnell to get the ball with class into our forwards with Riewoldt leading, Hickey being the second ruck/3rd tall and lets use milne as a lead up forward at times and lets try saad on the wing for 10 minutes a game.

Sounds like a plan. Anything is better than what we've had.

Four talls is the same problem we had today though.

I still like, and don't know why we got away from two talls, one medium, two smalls and a resting mid like we had the past three weeks or four weeks. So for example:

Siposs Roo Saunders/Murdoch/Armo/you get the point
Milne Maister Saad

Lee - Riewoldt - Dunnell/Siposs

Rotating Midfielder - Hickey/Koschitzke (when Hickey in VFL) - Milne

Maister, I feel, doesn't play "big enough" to be a genuine Full Forward, nor is he agile enough to play as a 3rd tall. Having said that, I'd prefer him in the forwardline over Hickey at this stage, but we'd have to fit in a second ruckman elsewhere

Sorry, can't have Maister. He is a 2nds player at best.
