Worsfold defends attack

This is my only criticism of Woosha - Inflexible.
Our forward structure worked early in the season when we had a fully fit squad and the opposition hadn't worked out how to counter us. I guess when Gardy & Embers are back there will be no more excuses. Put your best jumping boots on, Fido.

How is he being inflexible? He has tried talls like Wilson in the forward line and it hasn't worked any better IMO McDougall and Staker have been tried in the key forward posts when they are probably NQR. I think the point of the closed training session is to try something different in terms our structure.

Heard a report that Gardy is being brought back at FF. This is to allow his knee time to get used to the rigours of AFL action. I think this would be awesome.

He has played Wilson and other talls in the forward line yes, but the players don't know how to use the option when it's there. Our best footy is when the midfielders run through half forward kicking goals. They should still be doing that, instead of trying to pick out Wilson or Matera for that matter when they get in range. We should still play to our running advantage, and take the opposition on in one-on-one contests. We need a tall forward to give us another option, but the players should only be kicking to him or Matera when the opposition try to clog up our HF line. It gives them more space and we have less turnovers in defence.

I'm inclined to play Gardy in the ruck for the 1st quarter (stop our slow starts) and 3rd quarter, and up forward for the rest of the game. Cox is beginning to hit some decent form, so I'm happy for him to play ruck for half the game once the midfielders are warmed up.

we need a tall forward that can take contested marks. wilson is only good on the lead (and in his last few games he struggled with that). opposition teams clued into that and started dropping a man back into wilsons lead. as soon as the ball is a 50/50 wilson is ****ed.

other than that we haven't really had another option. mcDougall and staker weren't ready to come into the team earlier in the season.

All we need is a FF who is good on the lead. Wilson would be ample, although his confidence is irreparably damaged now. Contested marks in the forward line should be the last resort and will rarely give you enough goals to win a game.
The midfielders should be bypassing the forward line all together when the lead is being blocked - look for a lead at 60-70m out and if you can't put it between his knees and chest then keep running and either bomb it long from inside 50 or hand off. Spare men blocking leads will be scratching their arses in no time.
It's not an art, it comes down to coaching and I'm surprised with Suma's experience at FF they aren't better at it.

Player X gets the ball in midfield, has little pressure, out of 3-4 targets he choses one to kick to. If player X is Cousins, Judd, Fletcher or Embley...he hits the forward on his chest. If player X is Jones, Kerr, Braun, it's a turnover.
I agree with Woosha and think Matera is a great leading option, just DONT KICK IT OVER HIS ******* HEAD. Even if it's a mongrel that lands short, Matera's ability to gather and turn his man is awesome, or at the least get off a handball to a teammate.
Lately the option taking in midfield has really dropped off which you can put down to Embley and Fletcher missing, Judd getting the hard tag, leaving other less elite players to rack up most of the possesions.

the problem with wilson was that while great on a lead he could not mark overhead or in a pack. that makes out FF useless unless we get the ball on the rebound. if the opposition has time to fill up the 50 with defenders we are screwed.

And as I've said quite a few times, I reckon Hayne's is one of the best players on the lead in the competition. Unfortauntely he's kicking let's him down severely.....

and is it just me, or does he seem to be slowly making the transition into a very one dimensional player. He is at a good height to be able to play as a tall, but at the same time adapt to playing the ball at ground level, but as this season has gone on, he's grown into the FF role, but it seem's that now when the ball is at ground level he struggles........maybe it's just me, but it does seem that is happening??
