They are your close friends and suppliers? Number 1 no no in business imo. I'm with SirJimi05.

Well your opinion is not only wrong but woefully wrong. Try reading upon it. My son is half way through a MBA and part of it was in China. The group were taught all about this.

China is developing much faster than Malaysia. In both countries there are still dud suppliers, but Chinese quality continues to improve.

Do a google on "business relationship China"

This is one of many

Rather than allow a relationship to develop while a transaction proceeds, the Chinese will establish the relationship first and foremost and, if a trusting personal relationship is cultivated, business transactions may follow. This is in part because of the concept of gwanxi – perhaps best thought of as a network of relationships whereby you favor your friends and they favor you. This can work both ways and the Chinese will be careful not to become obligated to business partners until they have carefully researched the personalities involved. You will be well advised to spend time building your own network of contacts, but you should be aware of all the favors you have received and be prepared to respond in kind.

SO can you please explain to all of us what actual experience you have with doing business with Chinese suppliers?

I will stick to personal experience over a google search and some MBA thank you very much.

I know all about so called Chinese business customs but in the real world it is very different. Most Chinese businessmen that run large manufacturing plants are nothing more than snakes in the grass.

They are your close friends and suppliers? Number 1 no no in business imo. I'm with SirJimi05. I used to import from China. Very smart business people but cannot be trusted. I also had a similiar experience where they continually put prices up when the usd weakens. Another thing is they will do almost anything to avoid and sort of compensation when it comes to quality issues.

Started importing from Malaysia and had far less problems. Prices have not gone up once in well over a year now and all problems are addressed well. Quality is also superior.

Hmm i'm guessing you were importing furniture?

In regards to the quality issues you just need to do what i used to do. Assuming your terms are final payment before release of commercial documents you just tell your supplier you will not make final payment on current shipment until the settle all unresloved claims.

The supplier will tell you that you should just pay now because the container is due to arrive and it will delay clearence but just tell them you don't care and the container can go into storage if need be. Tell them you don't care if it sits there for a month and you will add any fees onto your claim.

Once they know you are serious (they will contact their shipping agent and he will confirm that you have instructed yours that you are not taking the goods) they will start to pack darkies because they effectively still own the goods and are liable for all charges. They will then start talkjing to you and negotiating.

I did this on a couple of occasions because it was the only way i could get them to rectify quality issues. If you don't they simply wipe their hands clean.

Isn't it also funny how they start off using decent quality leather and then after about 3 months the goods start arriving with really cheap, crappy leather? :D

It's just another way they do things. Give you a decent product to start with and then cost cut by any means to make more money. ISO certification bwhahah.....what a crock of shite!

So i take it you don't fall for the randon acts of friendship when you visit your suppliers?

The exquisite lunches and 2 x daily trips to the health spa/ massage / hookers don't do it for you?

The kind words and talk of long lasting friendship didn't get the job done?

What about all the time the owner took out of his busy shedule to wine and dine you?

Yet when you start having problems they are nowhere to be seen. :D:D

I do around $6M a year in trade with China. I have been doing so for around 20 years. I visit China at least twice a year, Taiwan once.

In reality each day involves 4 hour lunches and 6 hour dinners. I give and receive presents with each of my friends. Most have stayed at my house in Perth, with their families.

Now what's your experiences?

ps I'm 57 and have been running businesses since I was 27. I am a FAICD with diploma and Finst S&MM

For anyone interested a client of ours recently became an accredited Home Sustainability assesor. Basically the government pays an assesor $150 per home assessed and each assessment takes about 1.5 hours.

It's a service for the general public which is fully subsidised by the govt.

Do twenty a week it's 3k.

Google Green Loans Initiative.

With a start up of $1800 it's a nice ROI ratio.
