Adelaide has received the least free kicks this season out of all the 16 AFL clubs. Now we know it has been bad, but it's confirmed. Now generally speaking, the teams nearer to the bottom give away the most free kicks.

If Adelaide are known as being so disciplined, and are sitting 4th on the ladder, why on earth do we have the least amount of free kicks given to us?

It's been the same for 16 years, nothing has changed.

because most of the umpires are Victorian and they Hate us!! simple as that really!! especially Darren Goldspink he is the worst I'd like to see all the games he's umpired against Adelaide and see what the free kick count is it must be something like 45-14000

That's only half the story.

The really relevant stats that make the free kick count meaningful are free kicks paid to both sides that weren't correct, and free kicks that weren't paid to both sides but should have.

While we have had some stinkers paid against us, the real stat that would show just how shabbily we have been treated by the white (yellow, red, green) maggots would be the number of frees that we have not been paid. This is where we have missed out big time.

They used to make those stats available at one time, but apparently the umpiring fraternity and hierarchy have shut up shop and don't provide these stats any more - even though the matches are reviewed by the umpiring reviewers in this manner each week and stats kept.

Piss-poor IMO - consistent with their umpiring. :thumbsd:

Us crows supporters who remember their early days will know about the blatantly biased umpiring that used to go on back then.

I remember one game against Hawthorn in Melbourne the count was a staggering 16-41. Also the 2nd half of the 93 prelim is another example.

I believe though that this all changed after we won our first premiership, we semed to gain some respect. Now the umpiring is simply bad and I don't believe it to be biased. Actually I don't think it is the umpires fault, it is more bad direction from the umpire coaches etc.

I think it's a great stat...frees don't go our way.

In simple terms, I never played AFL, I played cricket so when the umpires weren't on our side we would tend to play even better.

Hence I think AFC are doing the exact same, striving in adversity.
You can't rely on free kicks to win you games...

Take FREO in perth for example.

The stat that I would be most interested in is Free kicks against us paid in the 50m zone for the opponents (as well as those NOT paid for us in our 50 arc). Seems to me we miss out on a lot of free kicks in front of goal whilst out opponents do not.

i think it's bad for every one, i can't remember a season where so many people are complaining about how bad the umpiring is. probably just unlucky that those stats have pointed out were getting shafted the most...

i blame jeff geishan, you were a shit coach at richmond, and now you have ****ed up the umpiring for years!

That statement doesnt make sense. You dont recieve frees for being disciplined. Thats an opposition issue.

Free kicks arent meant to be even. It is very possible to have more free kicks than the opposition but still be given a rough deal, just like its possible to have less frees but considered to have a good run. As someone else said, its the stats on the frees that were missed and frees that shouldnt have been paid which are more telling.

Its time the AFL were transparent with the free kicks given, not given, and the ones that they get wrong.

Its the only way they are going to improve the standard of umpiring and the resultant standard of confusion ( which goes from bad to "Im dumfounded" week in week out).

They mike the umpires up so we can here interpretations of a ruling but we dont hear the ones they miss. They generally do a good job at the beginning of a season and then it turns pearshaped as even thier understanding of a rule becomes clouded.

....while Im ranting......Im sick of hearing " If we bag the umpires we wont get any new ones through the ranks FFS!"

Everybody has a price- hell! get it from Cousins round the world trip.

I remember that also. With the Hawthorn game, Max Stevens was the boundary rider at the time and in one of the his reports during a break (I think quarter time) he said that the umpiring looked "a little bit suss". He then got kicked out of the dugout which he was sharing with the emergency umpire for the rest of the game. The 41-16 count agaist us was spot on, and if you can believe it the umpires tried to even it up a bit in the last quarter, some of the decisions that day were diabolical and at times laughable.

As for the Prelim against Ess in 93, this was all Goldspink, some interesting stats out of that game which I will take to the grave are:

Darren Bewick kicked 6 goals (5 of free kicks)

Gavin Wanganeen had 8 free kicks for the game including more free kicks personally than the whole of the Adelaide team combined in the second half.

Free kicks were 32 - 15 against Adelaide including 17-4 in the second half.

Yeah I have to admit I went to the Sydney game and the umpiring was digusting. I think last year the Hawthorn and Carlton games Crows got ripped off something shocking. Not to mention the last 3-4 weeks Crows have got less free kicks than all the teams they played. On the otherside though. I do hear Supporters calling out stupid free kicks when they're not there. Hey everyone does it.

I always do that when Im' at the footy, if we tackle them and there is the slightest chance of a holding the ball i'll yell out ball. Or when they tak it out of bounds, I'll yet out deliberate. Only do it at the match not at home, most to stir up the other supporters of opposition teams.

I only do that if I have nuff nuffs around me... and there were plenty on Sunday

I did the ''deliberate'' a few times. :D

one of the games that sticks out in my mind was Adelaide V Essendon at footy park I can't remember what year but it had to be late 90 early 2000 sometime and we won by 2 points and the crowd erruptted at the end because the umpiring was really bad! and I remember even my parents booing and they were normally quite at the footy!

The 93 prelim still makes me ill. But I thought that bald headed maggot Sheahan had a lot to do with the biased count. I forget his first name, he no longer umpires, but somehow did numerous Grand Finals.

Bewick, gee I hated him.

This has also just reminded me that Crows have never beaten Essendon in Melbourne. A curse of the 93 prelim.
