Before any lurkers get on and accuse me of making excuses for our finals loss, let it be known that this is not the point of the thread. However, Saturday night did bring up an unwanted milestone. We cracked the ton for free kicks against compared to free kicks for in 2007. What can we do about this? There are a few observations i have made that might be a bit skewed as i only have one eye open, so please neutral supporters, give us some constructive feedback.
- McLaren, McBurney, Goldspink and Chamberlain appear unable or unwilling to pay a free kick in our favour.
- This issue has only appeared since the Fonz described our style of play as ugly.
- We appear to be called to play on quicker than most other teams in the league especially when chipping it around.
- We appear to be pinged for holding the ball a lot quicker as well.

As i said i may be well off the mark but would like some feedback.

I noticed a 68-37 tackle count against the Swans on Saturday night too, haven't kept track of your other matches but you're normally a good tackling side IMHO.

Last night was some pretty awful umpiring, but our style is going to lead to free kicks against. The number of tackles we make create this, especially with the AFL seemingly on its way to outlawing the tackle.

Barry Hall gives away a lot of frees and doesnt get any, clearly not one of the umps favourites and does cop it from the men in white. He probably contributes 20 odd to that count. Few other guys lack a bit of discipline at times also.

The free kick situation needs to addressed ASAP. From our end as well. I do not doubt that we legitimately concede plenty of free kicks, but I just cannot see how the difference between those awarded and conceded is so great...

Some of the holding the ball decisions were just laughable, it got to the stage late in the game when it was all over that I wanted them to pay those decisions, just to bring the issue to everyone's attention.

Collingwood played brilliant football, we played shocking football and the result was as it should be considering the match. But that does not mean that the umpiring situation should not be examined. What if it was a close game and the umpiring was that ordinary? Something needs to be done from our end to stop us conceding so many frees, but I do beleive we get the short straw from the umpires more often than not as well...

wat was the free kick count on sat night?

Coll 27 vs. Sydney 16

Yes but the tackle count from Saturdays game was

Coll 68 vs Sydney 37

Normally people say about our free kick counts it's our style because we make lots of tackles which naturally breeds free kicks. But in this game we had nearly half as many tackles as our opposition and still got nearly half as many frees.

We were slower to the contest on the majority of occasions,(when we had the ball we were slower to decide the next option which meant that more often than not the ball was directly turned over or created another contest where we either bottled it up turned it over or got pinged for holding it.
poor decision making, execution of skills put pressure on the next contest & one of the philosophies of Roos seems to be if we can create another stoppage from them kicking to a contest by giving a cheap free away do it.
We are slower by foot against most sides, but on Sat night we were slower between the ears where it counts most & that really killed us IMO.

Yeah no doubt, the game was an anomaly though, my comment was more on the whole season.

For my 2 cents worth, a lot of the frees awarded against the Swans are warranted, however, I get totally frustrated when frees are not given. It almost seems that the umpires give a lot of leeway to the opposing teams e.g. holding the ball decisions. Swans players like Barry Hall are umpired more harshly because they are tougher and don't go to ground as easily as say Matthew LLoyd. Then you have the "golden boys" e.g. Nathan Buckley, James Hird, Daniel Kerr who receive frees quite readily.

I agree that since Fonz, aka Vlad made that quote about the Swans style the umpiring has been towards them has been very harsh. Maybe a $20,000 investment via a very public spray could be of great benefit down the track. I would quite happily make a donation towards this!

The swannies were hard done by the umps on sat night you were virtually playing against 21 Man Collingwood.Oh well they will get done friday because they will probably get homesick seeing as they dont have to play out side Victoria like other sides

I was watching the game last night and I think I have seen the worst decision EVER (big call I know...)

Jarrad McVeigh is trying to pick up a ball that is dribbling along the ground when a Collingwood player (I think it was Pendlebury but can't remember) cannoned into his back and he fell onto the ball. In the back was a clear as the nose on Scott McLaren's face so you can imagine the shock when the umpire pinged holding the ball against McVeigh!! Disgrace!!!:thumbsd:

Sydney supporters you just have to realise you are the new essendon, we copped it so badly especially from 98-2004. We were a very good side same as you guys now or were. Either the AFL or umpires just want to take you down a notch.

Iam glad they hate you now instead of us "McLaren, McBurney, Goldspink and Chamberlain appear unable or unwilling to pay a free kick in our favour." They are idiots and they think they are never wrong, they are the reason supporters hate umpires.

True, true. Maybe we need to get Brett Kirk on The Footy Show and get him to tell it like it is a la James Hird!!;)

But they can allow a match defining goal in your favour!

I can understand when we are second to the ball the free kicks will stack against our favour however in round 22 against Hawthorn we won by a huge margin and still managed to fall more than 10 frees behind them. Baffling to say the least. :(
