Just thought I would start a thread that compares all our trades over the recent past to what we gave up. Freo have taken a very different route to flag glory than many of the other clubs, we have become the biggest player in trade week.

Will be interesting to see over the years how the draft picks develop and whether we received value.

Croad/ McPharlin : Pick 1 (Hodge), Pick 20 (Elstone) and Pick 36 (Mitchell)
Jeff Farmer: Pick 17 (James Kelly)
Des Headland and Crowley: Pick 3 (Jarred Brennan), Pick 19 (Troy Selwood), McPhee
Mundy: Koops
J Carr: Pick 11 (Adam Thompson), Pick 27 (Patrick Garner), Pick 45 (Justin Sherman)
Solomon, Tarrant, O'Brien
for
Medhurst, Polak, Riewoldt, Reimers and Goldsack.

PS Ill edit if I have made a mistake or left anything out.

I will revisit this thread periodically over the next few years.

Matthew Carr for Craig Callaghan is another.

Also Steven Koops for Pick 17 or 19 (Which became David Mundy).

Its interesting the approach Fremantle seem to consistantly take, preferring to get established players rather than the top young talent. Its an established pattern, showing a lower valuing of the top-end draft picks than most other clubs do. I think this has something to do with your recruiters backing themselves to get good local talent deep in the draft and use the rookie list well, making it less important to get a wider selection (seeing as you would prefer to take the locals anyway, who will be available with later picks)

No one approach is better than another, McPharlin, Carr, Tarrant are top-notch proven talent - very little risk as opposed to the early draftees, and this year especially it makes sense because an 18 year old won't help you take the next step.

Solomon was basically a nothing trade... a risky, injury prone but strong and relativley young player for a risky-unknown 18 year old who could be anything or nothing. If you can trim solly down and his knees hold up he will prove great value off the bench or HBF/HFF with stints in the middle. Was a very good player when fit, and will be again if you can get him fit - therein lies the risk.

Adam McPhee for selection #55

#55 Ryan Crowley
With our picks in this draft, just shows you what sort of quality you can get with low picks as in Crowls case.

Tarrant: Polak, pick 13 and Medhurst

I would have been stoked if the Crows did this.

Medhurst and Polak cant even get in your best 22, draft picks are hit and miss even at #13 in a supposed super draft (sure you may get a Dal Santo, or you could pick up a Luke Molan ).

Add in Solomon which cost you stuff all, and you've done well. Well done. :thumbsu:

I will focus on the positives. Anyone who thinks we would have had our 9 game winning streak without the highlighted players is deluding themselves.

Especially Macpharlap and J Carr. Even DJ was the major reason that we won the game against the Pies.

Solomon, Tarrant, Collard, O'Brien and Mourish
for
Medhurst, Polak, Riewoldt, Reimers and Goldsack.

Collard and Mourish shouldn't be listed because they were recruited with our picks, not draft picks that we received from collingwood, essendon or richmond.

Goldsack :p
