Sadly we would be more likely to end up with Johnny Farnham

If he picks up a oppostion frontbench portfolio in the next 2 years, and the ALP lose again, could he be a worthy contender for ALP leader, and possible future PM by decades end?

Gaso
If he is given a portfolio and be seen to perform then yes I am sure he will be given an opportunity to bid for the Leadership of the ALP. But would he want to? Is Peter Garrett that much of a political animal? Can someone tell me if he is or not, as apart from his Green Party one issue stand I dont know if he is cut for the real thrust of Labor infighting and deal making?

Nah nobody would let an entertainer run a country would they ?

Usually, you would hope not.

However, Peter Garrett would just about be the only Australian "entertainer" (he's been far more than just an "entertainer" for many years now, but anyway) who I wouldn't have a problem with if he wanted to be PM.

Not Darryl Sommers or Bert Newton???

I hope not. I like his music but not his politics. I'd prefer just about any of the other ALP members over him. I believe he sold himself out somewhat to join the ALP.

I think he'd rather you liked his politics?

If he really wanted to hedge his bets, he should have run for the Senate instead of the House of Reps. Had the ALP won the election, then he was a chance for a ministerial portfolio. But now that they've lost (and by a thumping margin), all he can do is sit on his arse for three years and twiddle his thumbs. Not how you want a high-profile recruit to be biding his time.

Had he run for the Senate in NSW, he could have made a difference to the Senate voting in that state. He was running against just two government Senators up for re-election (Heffernan and Tierney), but maybe he could have attracted enough direct support for Labor to dislodge one of these two and theoretically prevent a Coalition controlled Senate.

But it's all just a theory now. And with the dearth of talent in the ALP he could be a real contender for the leadership. But wouldn't that anger the strong Labor right?

And who is the Lib talent. Still have the rabble of a front bench they started with 3 terms ago!

No chance in hell. Maybe he will get the ministerial portfolio for environment or something like that but as far as future PM goes, he has no hope.

Stupid statement

Of the 28 frontbenchers from 1996 only 8 remain with Howard, Costello, Anderson, Hill & Downer cabinet members since Day 1 to today with Vanstone, Ruddock & McGauran the other 3

Possible 'short-term' Liberal PM's

Costello
Abbott
Nelson

Lots of ministerial talent on the backbench

Hunt
Smith
Billson
Pearce
Robb

from Victoria alone

Sorry I thought you were asking for "talent" - I could name some nuffy Labor backbenchers no one has heard of if you like.

I'm not even a labor voter anyway!

But basically your costello is pretty good IMO. Ruddock, Vandstone, Downer are awful and have been from day 1. Abbot is an ok pollie but I think not leadership - ie would be a downward slide for the libs. McGuaran - how many years can someone be on a front bench while doing not very much at all?

as for the other 20 or so, well that shows the similar dearth because they are hidden and do nothing important. Just because you have lots of people in piddly ministries does not mean you have talent.

Now ok I'm sure they are ok - but this "lack of talent" in the Labor party is just a myth.

You sure are onto the path to the looney bin if you think Abbott will have a shot at the PMship. The Libs themselves will not allow it to happen. The guy is a loose cannon, it will be the death of the Libs if he takes over from Howard.

I hope you're right because he has been touted a future leader. Right winged religious freaks should not be running our country.

As for Garrett for PM? Won't happen. The public won't cop him. Even if he takes a portfolio and does a stirling job too many will be wary about his tree hugging past.

Costello..yeah fair enough. Would rather him as treasurer than as leader
Abbott..given he can't even beat Gillard in health..no chance
Nelson..hasn't got the balls to listen to student unions, wouldn't get enough supprt publicly.

Hunt, Billson, Pearce..why reward people over the Scoresby non-entity..they know their stance when applied to state level makes no sense?

Robb..oh now get real..he's only there because the people in the Liberals can't stand Kroger!

Smith is an unknown entity.

Compare this to the Labor back-bench:

Plibersek
Zahra
and a number of others

No Way not another "god bothering born again christian" Rudd would be bad enough. If Garrett had any balls he would have stood for the Greens and not sold his soul to the ALP for a safe seat.
