Surprised there hasn't been a thread started on today's articles re: our man Gaz apparently considering a crack at coaching the AIS under-16s (same job Voss and Buckley have done before)....

Obviously if he did, it would cause immense speculation he would be eyeing an AFL coaching gig somewhere in the future - namely at Melbourne (even though he denied that last night on Footy Classified).

Thoughts?

Seems like its only ever going to be speculation though. He's been denying that he wants to coach at AFL level for years, doesnt seem like he's keen to make the transition except in a pretty low pressure way like at the AIS.

He sounded pretty convincing on Footy Classified.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did one day take up a coaching gig, but this is a discussion for a few years down the line.

Intersting one. How many games will we need to win for Bailey to get an extension on his contract?

Personally I feel 8+ must be the benchmark next year otherwise the pressure for someone like Garry Lyon will really intensify. We need to show significant improvement next year

2 years in this contract at the AFL seems like a very convenient time to me... that is going to be very close to the time dean would be moved on if things dont drastically improve at melbourne... (i think dean will lead the resurgance so just looking at it as if it doesn't happen) Gary has never ruled out coaching and even last nite all he really said was that he wants dean to still be there because that means were guna be a force and be close to a flag...

its if this doesn't work, then gary will have finished his media contract(if he also takes 2 yrs) and would step in beautifully...

It would be supremely tacky for him to hide away in the media for three years while we rebuilt then wait for us to get a ton of draft picks before knifing Bailey for the job.

I've had my questions about Bailey but at least he's got an extensive assistant coaching background - let's not get excited just for getting a 'name' coach. And don't give me any of this Nathan Buckley shit either, he's done nothing yet and didn't even have the balls to take a senior job.

Much as I love the idea of Garry at the helm, I want Melbourne to see the next 2 or 3 years with Bailey. We all know that it will take a few years before we hit regular finals form, the last thing I want the MFC to do is cut Dean off before he gets a chance to show what he's capable of with a full list of match-ready youngsters who know the game plan. Garry coaching us in the next two years would bring in more of the speculation that the Dees are run by the early 90s crew by and for themselves though (not my opinion, but there are a few around who feel that way).

When Jakovich comes on board as football manager and Darren Kowal is CEO then it's going too far.

I would be suprised if you guys didnt make a big play for Viney in some role.

He was a great player for your club, relationships with guys like Stynes can certainly help those things happen.

I always feel that if you want to do something badly enough then you take the first chance you can even if its in a lesser capacity which is why I could never see Gary Lyon coaching.

Exactly right Merc, that's what I've been saying too.

Appointing someone with no experience at all as our head coach, such as Lyon, would be the equivalent of us playing Russian Roulette with our team's future. I said that last time this subject came up, and nothing's happened to change my mind since then.

Well said Mercs.

I love Gaz but I don't want Bailey looking over his shoulder. For me if Bailey wins 7+ games next year his contract is renewed, if not then I MAY consider Lyon.

I reckon Paul Roos would be the best possible candidate any AFL club could hope for. Just a shame he doesnt want to coach after season 2010, as he would have been a target of many clubs, perhaps even MFC.
